In WW1, it was regarded as a line running from the coast of Belgium down to Switzerland.
In WW2, (specifically late 1940 till June 5th 1944), the Germans regarded anything vaguely on the left hand edge of Europe as the Western Front, and thus a cushy posting. The Eastern Front, on the other hand .....
