Someone who volunteers ......

Within the British Army, it is used as part of a title for some TA units, often abbreviated to (V).

The other main use in the British Army is in the phrase "never volunteer for anything".

Few people who volunteer for anything in the military ever experience something pleasurable, although it may well be memorable and result in medals and soiled underwear.

When a military request for volunteers is made and there is a less than forthcoming response from the ranks, the upshot will quite often be a sad little squaddie being voluntold.
