Royal Military Police (RMP)


RMP Units

  • 4th Regiment Royal Military Police

4 RMP is a composite Regular and TA regiment. 160 Pro Coy based in Aldershot is the Regular company whilst the two TA companys are 116 Pro Coy at Cannock with a detachment in Manchester and 253 Pro Coy in London with a detachment in Southampton. See:

  • 5th Regiment Royal Military Police

5 RMP is a composite Regular and TA Regiment. 101 & 114 Provost Companies are the Regular companys based in Germany whilst the two TA companys are 243 Pro Coy at Livingston and 252 Pro Coy in Stockton-on-Tees.

101 Pro Coy

This company is based in the sleepy hollow that is JHQ, AKA Monchengladbach. The majority of its jobs are to do with cycling related offences, and as a result is never too busy/stressful (despite what the seniors/officers may claim).

114 Pro Coy

Based in Gutersloh, it has to deal with the RLC's finest. As a result, they are always mega busy, often calling on support fron 76 Sect SIB to sort out the most unsavory elements of the Garrison. Consisting of 11 Pl (Mr R), 12 Pl (Mr S) and 14 Pl (Sgt C), it is a fine company, from the top down, encompassing seniors who know what they're talking about, juniors who listen when talked to, and subalterns (Lt's R & S) who know how to go on the p*ss without upsetting the RSM too much. RMP Specialist Units

  • Allied Rapid Reaction Corps Military Police Battalion (ARRC MP Bn)

The ARRC MP Battalion is a National TA specialist unit and is responsible for the establishment and operation of the multi-national police HQ for ARRC. Applicants must have a police or recognised security background.

  • Special Investigations Branch (SIB)

Special Investigations Branch is a National TA specialist unit and provides specialist criminal and sensitive investigations in support of the Regular RMP SIB. Applicants must either already have a Regular army SIB or civilian Police CID background.

Phase 2 Training

Once TA RMP soldiers have passed out of TA Phase1 Training they go onto Phase 2 training. Phase 2 training for TA RMP soldiers is conducted at the Defence College of Policing and Guarding (DCPG) based at Southwick Park.

Military Provost Staff Corps (MPS)

  • 1 Company, Military Provost Staff

A National TA company formed in 2007 at Colchester to meet the enduring requirement for MPS support to operations (PW handling) and also used to back-fill for Regular MPS at the Military Corrective Training Centre (MCTC). All trained soldiers of the MPS(V) are ranked Sergeant and above.

To serve with the TA MPS soldiers must already be serving in a TA unit and meet the following criteria:

a) Must be a substantive Corporal. b) Must have 2 recommendations for Sergeant. c) Must be fully fit.

  • Training

This is undertaken at the Military Corrective Training Centre (MCTC), Colchester and delivered over two 2 week courses. These courses are designed to give you knowledge and experience to work in custodial environments both at home and on operations. The first course will deliver a foundation in military custodial procedures to equip you to handle Service Personnel under Sentence (SUS) within the MCTC and the second course focuses on PW Handling. The aim and objectives of both courses is to ensure that you have the requisite knowledge and experience to deliver custodial surety to the MOD and HMG.

Staff and Personnel Support (SPS)

The largest part of the TA AGC, SPS soldiers will be found within most TA units.

Phase 2 Training

The previous training syllabus (BMAC, AMAC, etc) has now been replaced with the Service Initial Personnel Administration Course (Volunteers) (SIPAC(V)). Once SPS soldiers have passed out of TA Phase 1 Training they will progress onto SIPAC(V) which is designed to be completed over the course of 5 training years for soldiers at the 'Steady State' of the Graduated Commitment Mechanism i.e. those with an allocation of 27 Man Training Days (MTDs) per year. The course can be completed faster if the soldier has been allocated more MTDs from his unit to do so. Class 3, Class 2 and Class 1 soldier status are awarded as the SPS soldier progresses through the various stages. Phase 2 training for TA SPS soldiers takes place at the SPS Training School (SPSTS) at Worthy Down, Winchester.

The stages of SIPAC(V) are as follows:

Stage 1 - SIPAC(V) Modules 1-3. This is the initial part of training towards being a Combat Human Resources Specialist Class 3 and consists of a 2 week residential course at SPSTS.

Stage 2 - SIPAC(V) Module 4. The final part of the training which leads to the award of Combat HR Spec Cl 3 status. It consists of a series of 4 weekends delivered by the SPS Regional Training warrant Officer (RTWO) at the relevant regional Brigade (Bde), the location of the training will change according to which regional Bde delivers the training.

Stage 3 - SIPAC(V) Module 5. The initial part of the training towards the award of Combat HR Spec Class 2, it is an 8 day residential course at Worthy Down.

Stage 4 - SIPAC(V) Module 6. The final part of the training which leads to the award of Combat HR Spec Cl 2, it is another 8 day residential course at Worthy Down. Depending how the dates fall an SPS soldier could complete Stages 3 & 4 as back-to-back courses.

Stage 5 - SIPAC(V) Workplace Training Book (WTB). A set of tasks to be completed in unit and verified by the SPS Chain of Command which leads to the award of Class 1 status.

The SIPAC(V) course differs from the Regular Army SIPAC course by eliminating those elements of SPS activity which the TA SPS soldier in unlikely to come across in their unit. These elements are taught to the TA SPS soldier as part of their Pre-Deployment Training (PDT) if and when they deploy on operations. In order to deploy TA SPS soldiers must have reached a minimum of Combat HR Spec Class 3.

Further Courses

  • Staff Support Assistant (SSA)

The SSA course is two weeks long, it teaches students the latest discipline policy using current JPA Business Process Guides and is enhanced by close links with PS2. A package of realistic scenarios enables the student to become proficient in using the Manual of Service Law and JPA. The course starts with a visit from PS2, who introduce the wider picture and the importance of recording and maintaining Military Discipline at all administrative levels. JPA practical and theory is then introduced in a methodical manner, starting with Custody and leading into Summary Hearing, Summary Appeals and Court Martial. Also included are lessons on AGAI 67, Service Complaints and many more areas of discipline.

During the course guest speakers from the Service Prosecution Authority (SPA) are invited in to brief the course, bringing with them current case experience. A guest speaker from the Military Corrective Training Centre is also invited to present to the students, covering the admissions process and using current case scenarios to set the scene.

  • Systems Co-ordinator (Sys Coord (V))

This 2 week course is designed for SPS (V) Sgts and is a requiment for promotion to SSgt, it is also the SPS competence that the Regular army wishes to employ on operations. Through instruction and group participation, students will be guided through the regulations covering key areas of Service Personnel (SP) pay and allowances, starting from the basics and ultimately concentrating upon areas of supervision. The JPA training database is used to enable students to practice inputting allowances and manage pay accounts. The Realistic Working Environments are used heavily throughout this course to enable students to put into context what they have learnt. By the end of the course the students will be able to problem-solve and will have discussed at great length the different methods of coaching their subordinates.

  • All Arms Basic Book-keeper

The All Arms Basic Book-Keeper (AABB) course is an intensive 8 day course covering the principles of double entry book-keeping and how they are applied to Service (Non-Public) Funds. The course involves manual book-keeping and students must pass 4 individual tests.

  • Regimental Accountant

The Regimental Accountants course is a 2-week course, which initially builds upon the manual accounting procedures studied on the All Arms Basic Bookkeeping Course. The remainder of the course is then taught and tested on the the Paxton Plus system software. Students will be required to conduct transactions in more than one Service Fund concurrently and using double entry bookkeeping processes.

  • Unit IMPREST Operator

The Unit Imprest Account Operators’ Course is a 9 day course suitable for All Arms Officers, WOs & SNCOs AGC(SPS) selected to fill the appointment of Unit Imprest Operator. The first 4 days of the course provides the students with the necessary skills for the correct maintenance of manual/automated accounts. Students are given a number of practical exercises during the remainder of the course prior to the final theory and automated practical examinations.


Promotion for TA SPS soldiers is in accordance with DSPS(A) policy directive 205 and the requirements (as at April 10) are as follows; at all stages soldiers must be recommended for promotion on their annual Soldier's Joint Appraisal Report (SJAR):

Pte - LCpl - Must be a Class 2 soldier with 18 months service from enlistment.

LCpl - Cpl - Must be a Class 1 soldier with 2 years service as a LCpl.

Cpl - Sgt - Must be a Class 1 soldier with 3 years service as a Cpl.

Sgt - SSgt - Must be a Class 1 soldier with 3 years service as a Sgt and must have held a pass on the Sys Coord (V) course for at least 12 months.

SSgt - WO2 - Must be a Class 1 soldier with 3 years service as a SSgt.

WO2 - WO1 - Must be a Class 1 soldier with 2 years service as a WO2.

At all stages the length of time a soldier must have held their current rank can be reduced by 12 months if they have deployed on operations.

Education and Training Services (ETS) - TA Pool of Linguists

The TA Pool of Linguists (TAPOL) is a territorial arm of the AGC (ETS) branch. It is a National TA unit administered by Central Volunteer Headquarters (CVHQ) AGC. They work wherever their talents are needed as linguists, translators and liaison officers. Applicants must have a language degree or be able to prove their proficiency due to family background or other experience. Applicants should call 01980 618907 or 01962 887597 or email

The exam past papers are available from The University of Westminster and you need a level 3 pass in all four skills to get in. TAPOL will not provide any training or academic support for passing the exam (which may explain why they are a rather small group of elderly Officers).

Army Legal Services (ALS)

The Army Legal Services is a Service Directorate of the Adjutant General's Corps that provides commissioned barristers and solicitors in support of the Regular Army. The ALS TA consists solely of TA Officer commissioned as Professionally Qualified Officers (PQOs), to apply for the ALS TA you must be a fully qualified lawyer with appropriate qualifications and professional experience. There is no formal age limit to join the ALS TA. Anyone interested should call 01980 615013 to discuss the opportunities available.

Typical Tasks:

Taking part in courts martial.

Advising the Chain of Command (CoC) on military discipline.

Advising MOD policy branches on legal matters generally as they affect the Army.
