Portadown offered Great Quarters, a new SLAM block. The town had seen extensive modernisation with lots of big named shops and fast food outlets. Also it was just off the motorway so escape was possible. All these factors made a dingy little camp into a top posting for NI, so good in fact they mothballed the base with the closure of 3 Inf Bde in 2004.
Isn't normalisation a bitch!

My home town - great for me because I knew where to drink. Town was mostly friendly to the army, except for one or two ghetto areas. Most bars out of bounds due to the enemy's ability to be able to blow them up regularly or conduct drive by shootings but if you went in for a pint no-one would dob you in.
