The Battles for Cassino and along the Gustav Line took place between Jan and May 1944. An estimated 180,000 men were killed or wounded during this 4 month period most of which were lost in the attempt to take the monistary that dominated the high ground at Cassino. The feature was well defended by German Paratroops and the Allies made a controversial decision to bomb the abbey Monte Cassino as it was allegedly being used by the Germans as a defensive position.
