General Support

I was going to quote ODOPS at this point, but it wasn't very helpful with a definition.

Normally, artillery is allocated to a Divisional Artillery Group DAG for the support of any manoeuvre arm unit that needs it on a case-by-case basis.

Almost all Close Support artillery within the Gunners is allocated as General Support or General Support Reinforcing, meaning they can be called upon by any sub-unit that needs them through their attached FOO/FST, with priority allocated by the CRA, delegated down through the FSCCs.

Thus although you may have Batteries allocated to you for a period of time, they may be taken away again suddenly if a higher-priority task develops.

Some units are lucky enough to have Batteries that almost always operate in Direct Support, such as the Paras & Bootys.
