SFOD-D Patch

The Best of the Best. Spams like to think that they are the best Special Forces in the world. Oh how the rest of the world laughed. And in fairness, they do try very hard.

1st Special Forces Operational Detachment-Delta (1st SFOD-D) and commonly known as Delta in the U.S. Army is the U.S.'s most elite counter-terrorist group that supposedly does not exist. They work deep behind enemy lines. They are also used to train armies and special forces groups for nations that cannot make their own.

Most recruits come from other US Army Special Forces and the 75th Ranger Regiment, but some operators have come from other units of the Army. Started by Colonel Charles Beckwith in 1977, the unit had the benefit of experience from the British SAS in its formation.

Their first operation was Eagle Claw, the failed attempt to rescue the American hostages from Iran in 1980. They worked with the British SAS during the Gulf War on "scud-busting" missions. They are also currently working in Afghanistan and Iraq but avoiding places like Somalia.

Ultimate personification of individual US military might ... Cum Git Some!

Alternatively...

Spam Special Forces (yes another one) but these might be a bit more special than all the other REMF's that claim otherness. In the past there have been no more than 250 'operators' on active service but since the DoD decided it needed many more special forces, numbers are now unknown. (no doubt suffering similar inflation of numbers as the SAS/2nd man on the balcony).

Not always the best prepared ... The unit took part in absolute FUBARed Operation Eagle Claw, the seriously failed attempt to rescue American hostages from the U.S. Embassy in Tehran in 1980. Then during the Invasion of Grenada, codenamed Operation Urgent Fury, October 25, 1983, a Delta team drowned during insertion due to poor planning and a total lack of training.

Chuck Norris was in the movie The Delta Force, but that movie sucks.
