Burton Magazine

Bizarre magazine that was attached to the left side of the "Lee-Burton" trials rifles that ended in the adoption of the Lee-Metford. A flimsy, exposed design, it could be moved from a raised position to a lowered position to either feed or not. The cartridges were aligned vertically (despite the magazine being on the left), and it increased the width of the weapon.

Utterly hopeless, but made it through almost to the end of the trials, and was thus very nearly one of the great British Military Procurement Mysteries, and one which would have set the adoption of charger loading back by a significantly long while, it being completely incompatible with the concept.
