The origins of the modern state of Bangladesh were established in the 1947 Partition of India when the region became East Pakistan.

This was based on their common religion (Islam), but developing a joint national identity of East and West Pakistan was not helped due to the geographically awkward 1000 mile lump of India that separated them.

Oh there was a bit of political and linguistic discrimination as well as economic neglect at the hands of West Pakistan as well.

Bangladesh was born when East Pakistan declared independence in 1971 after a liberation war, with help from India and the USSR.

Bangladesh remains among the poorest and most densely populated countries in the world.
