The AKSU-74 is a shortened version of the assault rifle and features a compact overall design, foldable butt-stock and a 30-round detachable plastic box magazine. Knowledge of the submachine form reached Western sources in 1983, during which the system was fielded against Afghan guerillas in the Soviet-Afghan War.
