Benchmark year that is widely accepted as being the waypoint that signalled the destruction of common sense, decency and morality that British society had gradually raised and nurtured for half a millenium by the Left Wing insurgency of Socialism.

By the summer of '68 the great unwashed armies of the Guardianisti had successfully infiltrated the corridors of power, industry, and - more importantly - the educational system, thereby ensuring institutionalised fuckwittery for the next forty years and beyond.

Major Events

The following major events took place in 1968:

  • 5 January - Prague Spring. Liberalization of communist rule in Czechoslovakia, begins with election of Alexander Dubcek.
  • 27 March - Yuri Gagarin, Soviet cosmonaut, dies in test flight crash.
  • 4 April - Martin Luther King Jr. assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee.

Military Events

The following military events took place in 1968:

  • The only year since the Second World War when a British soldier wasn't killed on active service.
  • 21 January - Vietnam War. Battle of Khe Sanh begins.
  • 30 January - Vietnam War. Viet Cong begins Tet Offensive series of surpirse attacks.
  • 24 February - Vietnam War. Tet Offensive halted. US forces recapture city of Hue.
  • 16 March - Vietnam War. Mai Lai massacre.
  • 23 April - Formation of The Royal Regiment of Fusiliers.
  • 20 August - Soviet army invades Czechoslovakia, ending the Prague Spring.
