There is a tale in my family that my grandfather, born in 1886, ran away to enlist under a false name to join the Boer War, was wounded, found out, and sent home. No proof of this has ever emerged. He went back to school and then, via a Militia commission, became a Regular and eventually left the army as a major in 1922.
