WW1 Gunner with service number of 1

    Hmm, sure it's not a strike mistake as his RA no is 640501 if you look at the medal card index.
  2. I was asking on the medal collecors forum www.medalcollectors.com about it and apparently a lot of Territorial Force troops were numbered from '1' onwards, so loads of soldiers could have the same number depending on their regiment or corps.

    With standardisation of numbers, these guys were given six-digit numers (as in 640501). The '501' was probably a nod towards the fact that he had previously held the number '1'.

    Had a look at his medal index card on the National Archive site and it gives both numbers for this chap. He also got a 'mention'.

    Cheers, I did a bit of digging after after I posted and was suprised at soldiers being given the same number. Interesting though.
