Why do they call them the 3 Rs?

Welcome to the Army Rumour Service, ARRSE

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial military website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. I read a piece today about schools and the delivery of the 3 R's.
Now call me predantic or just maybe I am missing the obvious, but they stand for Reading, Writing and Arithmetic - so where the hell did they get the 3R's from?

Were the government boffins on the pop when they thought that one up?

    Cheers

  2. [no wah] It's sort of phonetic: reading, 'riting and 'rithmetic [/no wah]

  3. In American Universities they teach the 3 R's as well.....

Reading, 'riting and Reaction to Effective Enemy Fire!

    Ill get my coat....

  4. Hi Dozy

That may be the case but when you are talking about education in the grown ups world, and they call it the 3R's and only one starts with an R - then one gets a tad worried.

If adults cannot get it right, what chance have the children got?

Right I am being predantic I will exit stage right now! :)

    Cheers

  5. Ah mate - definitely can't help you there, the grown ups world is one I rarely venture into! :D

Why do you think it is politicians who bandy the term around, whilst most intelligent people don't. The fact that you noticed the obvious mistake means you are in the latter class. Those that don't spot the mistake only get A+ in their GCSE's and A Levels.
