Who IS That Man? A sort of logic puzzle . . . . .

Welcome to the Army Rumour Service, ARRSE

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial military website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. Probably not new, even to ARRSE. But here goes.

A man sits alone at his desk, looking at a photograph, and says these words to himself :

    "Sisters and brothers have I none;
But that man's father is my father's son"

Fancy posting a logical explanation of whose photograph he's looking at?

(Preferably without resorting to mirrors etc.)

    Enjoy . . . . . . :D

(as Americans and The Young seem fond of saying.)

  2. You may well think that.
    I can't possibly comment. 8)

If himself, please explain how/why. :D

  3. A pic of his own son.

    His father's son is himself.

So that man's father must be him

So the bloke in the pic is his offspring.

  4. The photo is of his son.....

    NEXT!

  5. Well............

    are we right?

  6. No it's not

If he had a brother then the pic could have been his nephew.

  7. Line one excludes the possibility of siblings and cousins, thus narrowing the focus.

He (IMHO) is looking at a photograph of his SON.

    Thus :
That man = i.e. his son.
's father = himself (father os his son)
is my father's son = himself (because no bros)

    But I have had black & blue arguments contending it's himself . . . . .

Anyone care to propose that motion - logically?

  8. It is himself,

brothers and sisters have i none - only child

But that man's father is my father's son - his fathers son must be him as he has no siblings

  9. No but try this one.....

    Who

    LETS NORAH SEE SHARON'S TELEGRAM

    ?

  10. An over-hasty deviation.

    Shame!

    Let's hear-out the "himself" faction . . . . .

  11. this riddle ripped clean from a joke in a bernard manning routine, right? irishman on his way to the airport, driver says it's a long journey, we'll have some riddles.......

and for my answer, i've always said it's his son and BM got it wrong in his joke.

  12. you mean "marge lets norah see sharons telegram'?

  13. i hope you're not really int corps.

if he said "that man is my fathers son", it would be a pic of himself. but he doesn't.

    take the shame.

  14. I am my fathers son, so that mans father must be me. So that man must be my son.

    Try these:

A doctor and a nurse have a baby boy. But the boy's father is not the doctor and the mother is not the nurse. How can it be?

Two mothers and two daughters go to a pet store and buy three cats. Each female gets her own cat. How is this possible?

Brothers and sisters have I none, but this man's father is my son.

  15. CR i was hungover earlier and not on full steam, reading again i see my mistake. as for doctor nurse one, mother is doctor father is nurse?
