Where would you go if you had £200K and no ties?

Just for your information. Talking to a bloke from Littlewoods who was about to present an old dear with a cheque for £1m, he said that they advise anyone under 40 winning a similar amount that it’s not enough to enable them to give up work. This was nearly 25 years ago!
How old is the old dear now? For a friend.

As for living on £1m, it would depend.

You could make a reasonable income from it, no reason why you couldn't make about £20k a year from three quarters of that, after squaring yourself away with a nice house. Split that between you and a spouse and it would be tax free too, so equivalent to earning about 25k

You'll be lucky to get anywhere near 20k a year from a 750k investment in any sort of UK based account in the last 2-3 years. My lass & I have been looking at returns on those sorts of figs as once our respective mothers conk out we'll be in that sort of position & unless you want to start doing the offshore banking stuff & potentially getting into lumber with HMRC your annual interest is now where near 20k. Prob less than half that.

Philippines, Thailand or anywhere in Indochina. Philippines and Thailand have excellent medical care. Only disadvantage with the latter two is you’ll end up with ruddy cheeks, lime green safari suit and buying a girl half your age a chicken farm! And I'll throw alcoholism in as a free bonus.

...and the negatives are?

£200k?
Pauper level.
You need at least £1M in a pension pot to have no worries (at age 60)
£200k will, of course buy you a large housing estate in Accrington.

As I already have considerably more than that in savings and pension fund plus my own flat with 2 Moto Guzzi's in the garage and a good circle of friends I see no reason to go anywhere.
To be trite but true, money doesn't buy happiness, people do make you happy.
Health trumps everything.

I've got 5.4% a year at the moment on my little pile. It's quite safe but I can't touch it for 5 years.

As per title, if you had no ties, no debts, and £200K in the bank where would you go to make the most of it?

Not a weekend bender but to make it last as long as possible whilst having an enjoyable standard of living, staying in one place or travelling about.

Asking for a friend.
So you've come into £200k? Why don't we meet up and discuss the matter. Somewhere isolated where we can't be observed.

Bring the money - cash, low denomination bills - and don't tell anyone where you're going. For... er... OPSEC reasons.

I would buy a Yacht and berth in Cairns or Port Douglas near the barrier reef.

In summer I would take divers out to the reef and in winter I would take divers out to the reef.

In between hires and my own free time I would pay for Japanese porn stars to fly over to make porno's with me as the director, cameraman and superstar. I would allow a good friend or two to fly over from Blighty to have good times, act as stunt cocks and slap about little jap gangster pimps if they get out of line.

Are they relatively easy to rent though? In my professional world, the higher the yield on a bond, the greater the likelihood of default (the rental property equivalent of lying empty or being difficult to sell).
Yep.

Plenty of people up here looking for rentals due to a lack of council housing and a fairly transient population of short term contractors at Sellafield.

There are a few agencies up here who offer a 100% occupancy guarantee. They will continue to pay you rent even if the place is empty. Obviously they charge a hefty commission, but for an easy life and piece of mind it’s worth considering.

Work took me to transport co, the other week,

The drivers are all men of a certain age, working in shifts, lorrys on the go 24hrs a days for upto 8 weeks of the year to bring the harvest in.

One's a lottery winner, won several million pounds a couple of yrs back, allegedly still has most of his cash in the bank. Spent a bit on holidays, houses & family, must of retirement age does a bit of work for "pleasure"
My old man won the lottery in 1998. He had to share with eight others but got still got £1,234,612. He split it with his parents, bought a holiday home in Spain and gave up his job as a compressor engineer.

Five years later, most of the money had gone and he went back to full time work.

I'm sure there was a loophole in that if you had the land zoned as farmland, you were allowed to build a dwelling property on it for the farmer - I'm also sure it was with fat lower planning restrictions.

In fact I'm also sure I saw an episode of Grand Designs about a guy who did exactly that and build a.big **** off fancy eco house in the corner of one of his fields.
I think that if you were to build a house of character and quality planning permission is a breeze. Best talk to a planning expert first.

30 to 40k on a decent second hand camper van.
The rest in an account with easy access. Good recovery plan if it breaks down.
Start touring and working cash in hand jobs when needed.

Nice houses can be had, with property, in nice places IN the states for less than £100k.

Here is an example not too far from Ft. Campbell, and Clarksville. Having your front garden in Kentucky and part of back garden in Tennessee could have advantages, as well as make you feel like you have a bit of an empire.

There is another one 2 doors east for $10K less, just a slightly smaller bit of land.
