When Hosting Goes Wrong!

#1
As long suffering members of the site will know, over the years ARRSE has enjoyed quite a lot of down time often being unreachable for periods of several hours or more. I have to say though that we've always managed to avoid the sort of calamity that lots of web sites hosted by 123-reg.com are currently experiencing:

123-reg Clean Up Script Deletes Client Virtual Private Servers (VPS)

This is an extract from that email

As part of a clean-up process on the 123-reg VPS platform, a script was run at 7am on 16.04.16. This script is run to show us the number of machines active against the master database. An error on the script showed ‘zero-records’ response from the database for some live VPS. For those customers, this created a ‘failure’ scenario – showing no VM’s and effectively deleting what was on the host. As a result of our team’s investigations, we can conclude that the issues faced having resulted in some data loss for some customers.
Translation ...... we have deleted the entire website and databases belong to some of our customers!!

I can't even begin to imagine what those site admins are currently going through as undoubtedly some of them will have relied on the sites for their livelihood. Just better hope that they had a decent back up strategy....

There will be no doubt lots of SME's that in all honesty, dont get the internet and data, despite building a percentage of the business model on it. but as you say hopefully they ahve at least one person nagging them to backup backup backup.

Backups. Backups for the here and now, backups that do not touch any live system and backups off site.

Crypto-ransomware or fuckups. There is a reason for backups.

Because of the service related OCD many of us had hammered into us, we think its completely normal to have backups, of the backup or that triple redundancy is a not a sign of being a professional paranoid loony tune...

But you also have to check the integrity of your backups as well.
