What's happening with 21/23 SAS?

Last thing I read was a June 2010 article saying that they were getting axed, but there's been nothing on it since then. Have they just fallen apart? Are they slowly disbanding, or is all this new money for UKSF giving them a new lease of life?

I think that given their declining status on operations and the increasing in responsibility to the SFSG the end may be nigh. Although quiet how this will effect the regular blades, who knows?

Julian Brazier will ensure that they're safe. (And the money saved just wasn't going to be worth the Daily Mail headlines.) Though getting rid of them would have pretty much zero effect on the regulars....except for losing some nice cushy slots where you can still pick up SF pay ;-)

Lets be honest, what exactly can they do that SFSG can't do, Mag to grid then spend the money on better things.
Or we could reverse that argument, what to SFSG do that 21/23 can't do? Let Mag to Grid 1 Para, save a decent amount of money in long term wages and spend the money on better things. Indeed, we could mobilise to produce exactly the result we want, instead of having a mixy blob unit that was created as a result of cap badge politics....

Is it not fair to say that there is no clearly defined role for them on Operations and post SDR? They are not trusted to do the job the Regs do, but have a unique skill set which is not what the SFSG do. I thought there was some desire to move them along the SRR role and have them doing more reconaissance roles, but looking at what was supposedly found in Task Force Black - reconnaissance suffering on Op's in a conventional sense and HUMINT failing because assets were sticking out like sore thumbs - surely there is no desire or effect in subsuming them into SRR or re-tasking them?

They do quite Alot that 21/23 don't do, and this is not speculation either.

Dunno, but if you go along to the open day in March being held at 3 locations I am sure 23 will tell you. Not gender specific as they are also looking for support staff. More info via your CoC. How do I know this? The CO's letter is pinned to the notice board in the TAC, so no super secret stuff disclosed.

Re-role them as SFSG(R)?

I don't see them being re-roled as TA SRR; that job is too specialised. But 21/23's job is mainly, in the words of one of their DS, "High quality Infantry work." So it's possible they could make the switch.
