NATO: Military Bases

Mr. Curry: To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what plans he has to move NATO joint headquarters from Rheindahlen to RAF Innsworth; and if he will make a statement. [147239]

5 July 2007 : Column 1137W

Mr. Bob Ainsworth: The Innsworth site is one of several options being assessed as a possible UK base for the Headquarters of the Allied Command Europe Rapid Reaction Corps, currently based at Rheindahlen, Germany. A final decision will not be made before this autumn, and a move would not take place until 2009 at the earliest.

I hear that RAF Innsworth was closing.
Having been at Cosford numerous times (Where my trade does it's training)I dont think there's the room for a Log Bgd unless it's on the airfield side...

I don't think Innsworth is closing, its home to the Joint Casualty and Compasionate cell, which was flooded out earlier in July

Well it is definitely happening as it will save this Govt money they have already committed to other projects. Real question is a case of when and with what consequences, seems that ARRC are not happy about the move and thats the problem.

I heard that ARRC not keen on moving as it will disrupt their multinational balance etc. Guess they will simply have to do what the big man says. I know that the German authorities are already informed and quite relaxed about it, although they will lose lots of jobs, I guees they get back ahuge chunk of real estate and an operational airfield at Elmpt. (RYANAIR look in!) there has been no official briefing to families or personnel, just adrip drip effect of snippets of info, so that no-one can say they weren't told!

RAF Innsworth is also the home of the RAF PMA, which is in the process of moving to RAF High Wycombe. RAF Cosford has the engineering schools which are eventually moving to St Athen in Wales thus leaving the camp open for new units.
Oh and the Innsworth/High Wycombe move is going well. One of the lorries carrying paperwork crashed and scattered personnel, private documents for over four thousand personnel over the motorway.
This is gen from a RAF Copper.

Genius!!!!!

Real pity that no-one in JHQ is preapred to produce the timeline that is available but on close hold. It seems a bit Canute like to ignore the reality and hope it will go away.

Canute did not seek to ignore reality:

Canute is most commonly understood to be the man who tried to command the waves. As it is told in legend, the king grew tired of flattery from his courtiers. When one such flatterer gushed that Canute was so great, he might even command the sea itself, he was angry. Canute thought it right to prove his courtier wrong with a demonstration (at Southampton or Bosham; other sources say these events took place near his palace at Westminster). When the waves did not turn back at his word, Canute said that even a king's powers have limits.

Than you, I suppose I was really drawing an analogy with this attempt to command the waves and not suggesting that Canute himself was ignoring them. Perhaps there is an office in JHQ from where the order has come to ignore the incoming tide of woe that this move will create, perhaps in the hope that they can get out of town before it washes over them?
