Whats Afghanistan like at the minute?

Welcome to the Army Rumour Service, ARRSE

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial military website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. A mate's brother is deploying out there shortly, the mate was asking what it's like. I did a quick search, but I couldn't find anything. I'm not after a detailed political/strategic breakdown, think he's more interested in whether his brother's likely to be getting shot at everyday.

    Cheers for any help.

  2. Dry and sandy maybe - just guessing though.

Is there not a page for it on MoD website? Check it out and see.

  3. Depends where he is, but the answer is no. He is more likely to get hit by an IED, but then that really depends on what he is doing and where he is going.

I would recommend starting with the BBC website, where you can get a quick heads-up and/or go back through and see what had been happening over there:

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/south_asia/country_profiles/1162668.stm

There are a couple of other good sites for getting up to the minute info, so long as you are able to read through the bias/bumf:

    http://www.globalsecurity.org/military/world/afghanistan/index.html

    http://www.afghan-web.com/index.html

    http://www.cia.gov/cia/publications/factbook/geos/af.html

  4. Didn't even think about that

There is, apparently we've not lost anyone since Jan 2004, so I guess it's pretty quiet, or we're just more lucky over there than in Iraq.

  5. Cheers for those Bits, I'll pass them on to him

  6. when i was there 2 months ago it was coming up to the elections it was getting a bit dodgey lots of IED and a number of suicied bombers about but no shooting as thats not really the way they fight out there where about is ure mate going

  7. Fishing perchance? Get "your mate" to get his brother to give him a read out on the brief that he has been given....... alternatively, if you've got access to the newspapers chequebook, I can give you heaps of blood and guts, dagger between the teeth stuff.......

  8. Not a journo mate, sorry. Serving, Royal Signals. Just doing a favour for a mate. I'd have to be pretty deep cover to make 300 odd posts on here before asking a question in here.

  9. Should have put a smiley face on my last post! I'm still waiting to get a journo on the hook. But now that you mention the "deep cover" thing.......... Quick, conspiracy, infiltration..... under cover elite communicationds interceptors are monitoring all web sites in the UK.... Oh, they are? Ooops.

  10.

  11. Get in contact with 2 RGR (via Army net, LSSR etc), they are returning from there over the next few days after a 6 month roulemont tour, if you can understand them, they should be able to tell you everything you need to know.
