Whatever happened to natural selection ?

There is a very young whale in the Thames. It appears to have injuries on its head. It is probably dying because nature dictated for some reason it was unfit to survive. When I was a kid, if the story was covered at all , TV news presenters would just have shrugged and said, tragic but it happens. Now its the pitiful focus of a media circus covering the well meaning but equally doomed efforts of a bunch of do gooders trying to drive the wretched creature downstream. Nature is wonderful but it is also fecking cruel. It is as if we can no longer accept the doctrine of survival of the fittest, even though it is unfolding all around us, night and day..

We have forgotten the fundamental conditions for evolution
1. More individuals must be born than can survive.
2. There must be a struggle for survival.
3. Certain characteristics must give an advantage in the struggle.
4. Those characteristics must be heritable.

Certainly by having such a bloated welfare system number 2 no longer applies in this country hence we cannot evolve as a society.

Too many do-gooders wanting us to consider the ethics and rights of animals that probably have never given it any thought.

At this point, it's probably time for a tedious meme:

I think the truth is that we are fecking up the planet allot quicker than anything can adapt to cope with it.

But we have moved on from that now, the socialists have made it so. Survival of the fittest is just cruel Gammon speak.

We have apps to sort these things out, don't we?

Probs just on furlough and awaiting a cautious hug.

Are you suggesting some sort of solution to the problem.?

Maybe China were onto something when they restricted people to One child only.

Not really, as that policy is biting them in the arrse

Lots of millennial incels thanks to the one child (abandon female babies) policy in the 80's

The planet is over populated.
We don't have the means to spread out elsewhere through space at the moment.

So what needs to be done to reduce the global population to a sustainable level. Was Covid nature's way of a warning shot across the bows maybe?

Birth control in Africa and India for starters. Africa has the potential to be able to feed a large portion of the world if managed properly.

Prosperity tends to bring down birth rates.

Pandemics will become more frequent with a large population.

The next one may be more deadly

Protection and support, nay coddling, of those who do not contribute to the herd/society at the expense of those who do.

It has a finite life span.

Never mind World over population, why are we treating our own green and pleasant so badly?

We have been meddling in natural selection since the invention of medicine and the breeding of domestic animals.

Nature has been doing it for tens of millions of years and still does it in the wild natural world. The weak and the old/injured die off quickly through disease or starvation.

I have always suspected that nature intended the same for humans but we have confounded that plan a fair bit which has led to a world population of over seven billion which has become or very soon will become unsustainable.

No doubt humans are very smart when it comes to combating the likes of pandemics and such but I also believe that if we aren't the cause of our own demise, nature will take care of the problem for us.

If we didn't keep inventing vaccines, nature would long since have prevented the world population reaching 1Bn, and the planet wouldn't be in half the sh¡t state it is now.

Genetic engineering in the form of selective breeding and farming have been carried out since the 18thc, yet I well remember a few years back some bright young things in bio suits trashing fields of disease resistant GM crops planted by Monsanto, on the grounds they were 'Frankenstein Foods'. I believe the purpose of the experiment was to improve crop growing in the 'developing' world.
