Reconditioned engine for a Mercedes C class runs around £3000 (anyone remember the Ford recond engines, silver class or gold class?). Clearly car mechanics in Oz get much better remuneration than those in the UK. My local Merc specialist (not the dealer) is charging out around £85 an hour. I estimate 2 days, one for engine out, one to put it back, call it 10 hours a day, 20 hours work = £1700 + engine £3000 + oil and bits 'n pieces £1000. Total £5700.

So, not so high mileage, £27,000 for 4 years driving, Real bargain

It means if you buy a second hand EV/Hybrid, be prepared to scrap it if the battery fails,
it doesn't bode well for the second hand market in cars with a battery drive,
until second hand batteries are available

I’m not making anything up; I’m simply using a possibly scenario to expose the complete lack of any journalistic integrity. The Daily Express FFS, sindicating from a Leicester Mercury quoting a single source with an aganeda. It’s ******* laughable that you believe it. Neither you nor I know how this car has been used.

How much do you think it would cost for a Mercedes main dealer to rebuild an E220 engine? The bill isn’t going to be less than £5k, probably quite a bit more. If you buy a four year old car and run it until it’s 8, you run the risk of a bill which is uneconomical to repair. Would you spend £5k on a £12000 car; I wouldn’t. Point being, anything major on a premium car of that age is quite likely to be unviable. So why single out batteries?

All this article proves is that it’s dumb to buy expensive cars this way. Matey boy has taken a £17000 depreciation hit over four years. That would have funded him a brand new E-Class on PCP with a five year warranty.

As for our hybrid; it’s brilliant. We’re now approaching 20,000 km in 6 months. Frankly, the cost of a battery (or any other) repair doesn’t enter my head; it’s got a five year unlimited mileage warranty.
