I wee story to warm the cockles of your heart

Irish fear loss of British potatoes post Brexit

There is an upside to this story. It is an upside that certain sections should take heed of, instead of bawling their eyes out.

“Farmers are very good at doom and gloom, but there are opportunities here,” he said. “It might help restart the seed industry here and make the public more aware of where their seeds and potatoes come from."

Extrapolate farmers and potatoes and apply to every business sector / product.

Less doom & gloom and more nose to the grindstone to identify the positives instead of dwelling on the negatives.

You’ve got more chance. Winning the Euro millions than them getting the money back.
Then the way forward is simple. The UK waters are for UK fishermen. EU fishers can apply for a licence paid to UK for a limited and checkable catch.

This way profits stay in UK and don't have to be clawed back!

Why is the EU so desperate to hang on to Britain’s huge fishing grounds?

green and yellow is good
Orange and Red is oh bugger!

regardez this EU carte de fish stocks

The question Mr Barnier should be negotiating is how long the first deal is for, 3 years or 5 years before they come to us and negotiate another deal (price will obviously be increased).

The EU should be thanking the UK when it comes to fishing restrictions, even there own internal Auditors acknowledge over fishing is an issue and threat.

EU action has not led to the recovery of significant marine ecosystems and habitats, according to a special audit report published last week by the European Court of Auditors (ECA).

The audit covered the period from 2008 up until March 2020. It focused on the Bay of Biscay and the Iberian Coast, Macaronesia and the Western Mediterranean Sea. The auditors visited the four member states with coastlines on these sea areas (Spain, France, Italy and Portugal) and consulted an expert panel to analyse links between environmental and fishing policies.

Meanwhile in the North Seas

More than half of the fish and shellfish caught in Shetland waters is landed by EU fishing boats, while the local fleet gets less than one sixth.

That is according to figures in a new report by Dr Ian Napier of the NAFC Marine Centre UHI.

The report says a third of all fish and shellfish landed from UK waters come from Shetland’s so-called “Exclusive Economic Zone” (EEZ).

Drawing on official figures for an area of 127,000 km2 around Shetland, bounded by Faroese, Norwegian and the remainder of UK waters, Dr Napier calculated that local vessels landed 14 per cent of the fish and shellfish by weight and 21 per cent by value.

But EU boats are said to have landed 56 per cent by weight and 38 per cent by value, with other UK vessels making up the remainder.

So why are they so worried about getting into British waters
Think about it. I don't think this is very much to do with fish and everything to do with EU French control of waters. Their subtext is all about blockade, their fishermen blockading British ports. We could probably give them say a quota of 20% of catch, but that would entail boarding by UK officials and their compliance with our quota. It also means that French fishermen would have further to travel to the North sea and that is traditionally Swedish, Dutch, Dane and German. Or they have to travel further to Biscay from the northern ports. Additionally there's probably (i.e off record sales) a fair amount of skulduggery for payments of Fish landed in France to British Trawlermen they won't be able to capitalise on. Control that area and strategically we are cut off in the same way as if NI were handed to ROI. But if they want to cut their noses despite their faces at places like Calais Dunkirk etc in some ways the Haulage industry benefits- more rest on Longer routes.

This is the sort of thing we are going to miss though.
Belgian MEP involved in a 25 person, mostly Men gang bang. Its a Google Translate, sure some here can do better.

The facts, revealed by the last hour, took place on Friday evening on the first floor of a bar in central Brussels. The police put an end to a game of legs in the air involving 25 people, mostly men. “We interrupted a gang bang!”, Confides a source familiar with the matter to La DH. Facts confirmed with good source by our colleagues Het Laatste Nieuws.

Among the offenders was ... an MEP. This one tried to escape via the gutter, specifies HLN. When arrested, he brandished his parliamentary immunity, prompting the intervention of the Foreign Ministry. Diplomats were also said to have taken part in the underground party.

Alcohol and drugs were also reportedly found at the scene. All those present were fined but relaxed by the prosecution.

EU countries 'impatient' over lack of Brexit progress, says Angela Merkel (msn.com)

On the one hand:

"In Madrid, France’s Europe minister warned that Paris would not allow French fishermen to be sacrificed to get the deal done. He said that it was unacceptable that Britain “should lay down the law" in the negotiations.

"Our fishermen are no less important than theirs and they didn't have the right to vote in the referendum," Clement Beaune told reporters on a visit to the Spanish capital.

“There can be no agreement unless there is one that gives sustainable and wide-ranging access to British waters," he said"

Whilst on the other

Ireland’s foreign minister told the British government to stop the “blame game” over the deadlocked negotiations because they rejected the chance to have more time for the talks.

"The British Government was offered a much longer transition period, and they turned it down, yet they're now blaming the EU for it - that's just ridiculous," Mr Coveney told BBC Radio Ulster.

"But I think a deal is possible because the consequences of no deal are so costly and so disruptive, particularly for the UK and for Northern Ireland, but for the Republic of Ireland as well.”

“The truth of Brexit is now being exposed in terms of the challenges of it,” he added."

But the UK response to all the bedwetting?

The Prime Minister's official spokesman said: "We want to try and reach a free-trade agreement as soon as possible but we have been clear that we won't change our negotiating position.”

The article also notes dissent in the ranks:

"In Brussels, the European Commission resisted demands by EU governments to publish emergency no deal plans for fear of upsetting the delicately poised trade negotiations

Emmanuel Macron, with the support of other EU leaders such as the Netherlands’ Mark Rutte, called for the plans to be launched at a November 19 summit.

The demand was repeated on Friday last week by EU ambassadors during a meeting with Michel Barnier.

The commission said yesterday it was “fully focused” on the trade negotiations and that businesses and citizens had all the information they needed to prepare for a no trade deal exit.

Germany holds the rotating presidency of the EU, meaning it chairs intergovernmental talks in Brussels.

"People are calling more and more energetically for contingency measures. I'd like to wait as long as possible before we introduce contingency measures,” Mrs Merkel said"

She added, “I think we should really put all of our efforts into the last step and the last phase of the negotiations in hopes of reaching a negotiated agreement."

The emergency plans would be unilateral, temporary measures to mitigate the worst impacts of no deal in EU interests such as aviation and freight.
Seriously? They've had nigh on 4.5 years iot plan for 'No Deal'. When are they going to start, the week before the end of the Transition Period? It's almost as if they think they're going to get a deal!!

Leaving aside the salacious details of this case, the amazing thing is that an MEP can claim immunity.

They can commit crimes and the EU will protect them from prosecution.

It’s one rule for the ruling class, another rule for the plebs.
