I was at a talk earlier this week by The Ford Institute for Human Security on the specific of child soldiers, drawing on statistical analysis of factors pertaining to, correctly or incorrectly, instances of child participation in war.

The standard reasons given are

1) Lighter Modern Small Arms.

2) Poverty.

3) Orphan rate.

When data was drawn and plotted for several countries there appeared to be no (or very little) direct correlation, i.e. these factors as causal rather than exacerbatory.

The Ford Institute for Human Security published this as a document, and thought someone might be interested in it as it available as a *.pdf...

Not needing one in the first palce would be my preferred option.
Not much chance of that however.
Unfortunately I think the reality is as you say...but thought that this document might be of interest to people who were deployed during the 90s and those who may be deployed at some time in the future on such duties...
