To work off that beer, or give you a thirst, try chamois-stalking!
If you can shoot, it's a truly magical experience.
You do need to be (a) pretty hill fit; and (b) able to shoot straight.
If you bag one, you may be assured of one hell of a party. Light duties advised for following 2-3 days. The "crack", food and wine are fantastic. The Bavarians are as hospitable as the Irish. I richly recommend it, male or female.
A great area, for food, drink, and scenery. Climb up to the top of the ski jump there and think "NO WAY". Go to Sonthofen too, lovely little Bundeswehr Garrison town with some nice restaurants and bars. See if you can have a look in/around the Generaloberst Beck Kaserne, bloody amazing place. I was stationed in that Allgau area for 9 months back in the mid 1970s. Loved every minute of it.
The local history museum (Heimatmuseum, Ostrasse 13) is well worth a visit. They've got the biggest boot in the world there too.
Another place to visit is the "Breitachklamm" near Tiefenbach. A narrow gulch about 400 feet deep through which the Breitach river boils. There's a path along the side anchored to the rocks, with various briges across. Marvellous place.
Otherwise, get into the nearest boozer, slam the tap into a barrel of beer and say: "O'zopt ish"! Then start drinking.
Oberstdorf is a great place, especially in summer and winter. There is plenty to do from hill walking and mountaineering on the Wildspitze and Zugspitze to white water rafting. Their is also a glacier nearby for some summer skiing.
In the winter there is some good skiing both downhill and cross country. Next year - Jan 08 the first Army Telemark Ski Championships will be held not far from there in Austria - you should check out this website www.gbtelemark.co.uk for more details, please sign the guestbook.
Spent quite a lot of time down there as a Snow Queen princess, assistant instr, not a Snotty - Downhill Only. Engelbrau was a firm favourite though there were many other good 'uns to choose from each town having it's own brewery.
Interesting factoid, beer is cheaper in Bavaria than the rest of Germany, they (Die Batzis) don't tax it to the same extent. Nor will you normally be served anything less than a 0.5L (pint) glass of Pils. Real men should always order "Eine Massbier bitte" (1L) anything less is suspect.
At some stage of the trip a hangover is inevitable, so a shandy is acceptable as a warmer into the bank but do try and "Fight Through." Ask for "Radler mit weisse Limonade" (lemonade) otherwise they'll chuck fizzy orange or some other gop in it. Altbier is similair to our bitter and not too bad, avoid Weizenbier, Weissbier, Malzbier and Fruchtbier - it's minging.
An excellent shopping opportunity for all manner of "Goodshit" is the American PX in Garmisch Partenkirchen. Take US Dollars and your ID card to avoid disappointment. Also available in the stadt is a MacDonalds if you fancy a change from currywurst/bockwurst/schnitzel. Try Greek or Balkan restaurants for good cheap plentiful grompf.
and try and pump as many of their daughters up the arrse in the time you spend there.... no finer activity. the one with the dirtiest knob is the winner, no cheating by bumming bavarian cows though. The way to check is skiff each other to certify its female excretea! And also get you mate to verify that you have wiped your helmet on the curtains, for verification of the cause, you should get double points if you managed to lay a cable in her handbag, whiles she wiping her bacon sandwich in the bogs!
