West Midlands game fair.

Did anyone go to this?

I went on Saturday and wasn't too impressed. As a kid it used to be the highlight of the year with the longest gunmakers row of any of the fairs and a pretty impressive clay shoot. Seemed to be much smaller and rammed with police trying to put a clamp on the chronic gypo problems. Some nice guns for sale in the Cheshire gun room, pretty competitive prices too. Elsewhere I saw some of the thin walled junk from holts recent sale dragging punters in with cheep prices for the magic London names.

Am I just being nostalgic about the WMGF or has it actually got crap?

Didn't go again this year because everybody who went yesterday said 'twas crap.

Like all the game fairs the entrance and stand costs have been going up and up but the benefit isn't there any more. Time was when the only way you could see many different guns was to be really lucky and have more than one dealer within convenient browsing distance or go to a fair, now you can get on Guntrader and compare thousands of prices.

Weston Park probably has a lot to answer for too, their rents have gone up and up since they started having the V Festival. They seem to find having any other events a bit of a chore, the two point-to-points that used to be there left years ago because the park used to feck them about and I'm told it looks like the eventing will go too.

Add to that the fact that it's infested by thieving scrotes from Telford (I know three people who've had purchases nicked in recent years) and you have a less then pleasant experience.

Most Game Fairs and the like have been progressively less attractive for specialist traders and punters actually seeking things that go bang.

No shortage of people selling overpriced tat and traditional country wear made in China and Mauritius though, so they have tended to become mobile retail outlets, some almost indistinguishable from the awful "Craft Fairs" that pop up apart from the presence of horse shit.

Has anything filled the void? I remember going to the Shropshire country show at Harper Adams one year and that was actually quite good. People seem to actually be showing things rather than flogging shite.

The British Shooting show is getting better, no jacuzzi salesmen but sadly infested with airsofting walts. This year is the second year they have held it for 3 days so we have decided to start going again. We used to do all of the shows (about one a month is more than bearable) and have cut it down to CLA (expensive but now treated as a holiday mixed trade fair so I can get pissed if she isnt watching me) the shooting show for launching new products at the end of the season rather than selling end of season fashions and the Highclere show on whit weekend as its the IGL retriever championship and is full of dog folk!
Apart from that the rest are just sh1t and expensive to boot. If a punter wants a discount it had better be for a lot of stuff as his entry fee is miniscule compared to a traders!

The Welsh one wasn't much cop either. Browning had the starshot thing going and there was loads of ducks and owls.

I wasn't too dissapointed with the Midland, wasn't too big and some great demonstrations in the dog ring. However there was an inordinate amount of chav tossers about the place and less of the kit I was looking for, namely some decent shirts for shooting and not the Rydale/Yorks clothing tatt pumped out of china.

Not been to CLA for a few years as its just way to big for a single day and the entry price is rediculous!

The BASC gamekeepers fair is worth a look though.

I've always fancied doing Catton park but going for a day to check it out is a long way!

A visit to the Barbour shop in South Shields may save you a lot of money.
