Because it's still trebles all round and it's an indoor job with no heavy lifting, loads of pay and an expense package you have to go to Brussels to better. Fine and dandy it is... For THEM.

It's not, but in Westminster/MP/London bubble they tell each other and msm they're doing a great job and bubble & msm echo that back to them as they all agree: BoJo, Farage & Trump bad; EU & Socialism good

Hitchens is a former Trotskyist who knows a thing or two about dystopian nightmares. His entire thread is the UK is morphing into the same territory and I happen to think he's right...

I cannot stand a man who just equivocates.

You, Sir, reek of a lack of moral fibre.

For starters, there isn't enough of them. Without the numbers, BANNER at its worst would have been unmanageable. I recall something like 20,000 soldiers (not counting police and UDR) deployed to it at the peak. Where would we get that from, now? We have a Regular Army of 80,000 and a good deal of that is, as pointed out in other threads, unable to deploy due to fitness/medical etc. Recruitment is in the toilet and retention isn't great either.
it's not very well documented right now but recruitment has now turned around and is sky high.

ITC catterick is completely full and the headquarters are trying to find more beds and instructors to get the field army up to full manning again.

That reminds me I must check my shares in Porcine Aviation...

Given the recent recruitment campaigns surely we should be focusing on recruiting suitable numbers of 'emotional support animals' for the new lads?

Christ, the penny dropped for me with the mass invasion of Trabants in 90. The writing appeared on the wall, or rather, the wall disappeared, overnight. That is the bookmark of decline.

Bollocks. Do you think the boys and girls on Herrick (all incarnations) were noticeably worse than their forebears? Less effective? Less hard fighting?
You sir, are confusing front line troops ( of all 3 Services ) with the systematic degradation of the Armed Forces by Politico's, the utter failure that is the MOD ably assisted by PC dafties.

I guess you never heard the phrase

Lions led by Donkeys
Whoever said it, was referring to WW1 and not much has changed since.

I’ve just retired, for the second time, with a combined Regular and FTRS service just shy of 45 years. I joined in 1971 and what I can say without fear of contradiction is that the raw material coming through the doors of Phase 1 establishments or Sandhurst is the same. In the main, great lads and lasses who just crack on and take the crap and messing about with similar banter and humour. Guess what, there were biffs and wasters in the Army of the seventies and eighties too - although not as many lasses, admittedly!
What has changed without a doubt and where Hitchins is spot on, is the sheer amount of PC imposed bollocks the modern Armed Forces has to contend with.
As an example, on my final day of service, I spent an hour or so alongside my Line Manager, both logged into JPA and on the line to our local MS rep, tweaking the only MANDATORY objective on my OJAR, which is all about recognising Equality and Diversity. This had to be achieved before they would allow me to complete my discharge process.
What a load of bollocks, but, hey, despair not - the MOD is in Stonewall’s top 50 employers. Job done!

If any nation in the world was sainted it was the United Kingdom, which was built on the classical ideals of stoicism and fair play. That has largely being binned for a woolly set of touch feely utopian ideals that don't ask, but demand compliance.

Military Operations at root is a section, ship or plane operating in the field and having some trust in above to support them both logistically and have there backs legally. To an extent the legal side has reduced the aggression over the decades and to try and mess around with the basic building blocks is very dangerous and will dial down the aggression by another factor.

Agreed. I have a friend whose three sons are all bucking to join the Services. All are good lads with great senses of humour. All are of university or secondary schooling age. All display a weariness connected to the various edicts that our politicians force upon us. It's not just the older generation, despite what the propagandists like to espouse.

The saddest things I've heard recently was of a freshers' disco where the males and females (yes, they still exist, folks!) stood at opposite sides of the room barely daring to speak to each other for fear of falling foul of some 'offence' or other.

A small minority of haters - because that's what they are - are being allowed to hijack the mainstream and the moral agenda. No-one is crying foul, or Emperor's new clothes.

Compliance is mandatory and woe betide anyone who objects. The root cause is senior managers are moral cowards and accept it all to avoid your minority kicking off.

But also because they'll get kicked by those above them.

Brexit for me has enshrined what's wrong with politics in this country: a political class divorced from listening to the majority. But it runs throughout the whole system.

Blimey you mean f*ck a fresher week has gone the way of the dinosaur, well that's the University experience ruined

Next you're going to tell me they don't pick the University by the length of the student bar in the brochure anymore

I spoke to a S/Sgt from what was/is my old Regt, RTR. When I served in the 70s we did lots of things together as crews or as a Sqn. We socialised together that built comeradship.
Reading between the lines, he spends most of his time sitting behind a Computer screen.
He even hinted that crews aren't encouraged to go on the piss together. Sqn bars are banned, I'm not even sure there is a bar on camp. Jnr NCOs don't have a Mess it's a Social club.
The Tanks are restricted to 200 miles a year, lots of reliance on simulators. The Regt is currently on the Ranges, live firing that's good. Currently there are two female vehicle commander, with a couple of more in Basic wanting to go into Tanks.
He's also got a daughter, who wants to join up and be a Combat medic. He couldn't be prouder.
I think our Army's in good hands at the moment, with the current generation of Senior NCOs. We just need our Pollies to stop being twats and not be self-serving.
