I've received this email from a friend, urban myth or genuine threat? advice or comments please, Cheers e_m

IF THIS PERSON CALLED SIMON ASHTON (SIMON_25_@HOTMAIL.CO.UK) CONTACTS YOU THROUGH EMAIL DON'T ACCEPT HIM. DELETE HIM BECAUSE HE IS A HACKER!!

TELL EVERYONE ON YOUR LIST BECAUSE IF SOMEBODY ON YOUR LIST ADDS HIM

THEN YOU WILL GET HIM ON YOUR LIST. HE WILL FIGURE OUT YOUR ID COMPUTER ADDRESS, SO COPY AND PASTE THIS MESSAGE TO EVERYONE EVEN IF YOU DON'T CARE FOR THEM AND FAST BECAUSE IF HE HACKS THEIR EMAIL HE HACKS YOUR MAIL TOO!!!!!...

Hoax. A hacker can easily get you IP address but what would he gain from hacking your computer unless you store all your online bank account details in your web browser etc.

Most they'll get on joe public is a load of dodgy porn and maybe try to get you to download some malware.

There isnt much you can do with an IP address. Its step 1 in hacking, piss easy to obtain and any cript kiddy can learn to do it on youtube. It was only a problem back in the old days of computing, the mods & admins here have access to all our IP's, as does every other staff member on forums. I wouldnt worry about someone having your IP address. Though when you accidentally click on RAT's (remote administration tool aka reverse-connect trojan), thats where you end up completely screwed over. Just dont accept, open or download from sources you are not sure of.
