War graves

Pass a few cemetries etc with work and see the portland stone ones standing there but I've also seen a few granite ones. And any idea as to why some stones have the capbadge in the center of the cross and not above it RA seems to spring to mind :?
Most of the Portland stone ones are placed there by CWGC and they have the badges and inscriptions put on them. The granite ones could be private ones.

There is a plethra of combinations of CWGC headstones.Cap badge, no cap badge, cross, star of David etc. VC and GC's engraved.

Any Holts battlefied tour books give a short explaination.
