Wales to Nationalise Railways

LARD

Quite so. But that would be in Captain Pugwash though.

It worked when I was a kid.
Yep but they had dragons in the firebox then.

It is an impossibilty. Nearest you get is opening up the public purse and say to something perverse that exists only to take the piss: "Help yourself" (See: HS2)

The number of people who still don't know what Network Rail really is, let alone that it is in public ownership, is staggering.

Bit like those who are allowed to think that the BBC still runs UK radio and TV transmission infrastructure
In many ways, it’s a wicked problem. Cummings is one of the few people near government in my lifetime who understands the problem, but he’s never going to be accountable to the short termism is the electorate nor is he ever going to wield the power necessary to take on the vested interests.

There’s no way on earth that the railways will be operated efficiently under public ownership, whether operated by the public sector or contracted out.

Same in England. Bike shops were exempt during the full shutdown all across the UK. Grant Shapps is obviously a comintern sleeper.
All to do with exercise and fighting obesity. Transport policy around the world is very big on self-powered transport at the moment - it's green, it promotes better personal fitness and so relieves stress on the healthcare sector, and so on. Oh, and air quality - all the cards, in fact.

An additional element during pandemic is that with gyms shut cycling remained a viable form of exercise.

(Although @ThelmatheBelmer has to live with the peril of me zipping past in full Lycra.)

Yeah, if Cummings makes the rule through his sock puppet it’s about health. If it comes from a devolved administration it’s automatically grrrr communist plot.

Just one problem. If A Nationlised set up didn’t work, it would mean that Wales’s nationalised railway has a far smaller usage and has to raise money from a smaller tax base. So how does this work?

they will eventually get their own tax raising powers, guess what happens next?

Technically they already have, they can set their own rate of income tax now if they wish it doesn't have to match England

Of course people might stop voting for socialism if they have to pay for it rather than the English, so dippy Drapeford hasn't been stupid enough to do it yet

Idris - must have been a black dragon.

In fact, I’d go further. Almost all of Britain’s railways were built by private companies. The shareholders of those companies were not compensated for their property when the railways were nationalised. Their assets were sequestered by the government of the day.

Those assets were then sold by the Major government when Network Rail was privatised. Only to be sequestered a second time when Stephen Byers re-nationalised rail infrastructure for a second time.

Why the **** would any private company or individual invest in railway infrastructure in Britain?

You're wrong. The railways were effectively bankrupt before WW2. The shareholders of the rail companies swapped their shares for the new BR ones 1/1/1948 and were guaranteed a 3% return.

How's your campaign for a govt bailout for your BA shares going?
