Voting reform for the UK

To quote Disraeli in 1867..

" If, on the other hand, it be looked upon as a measure having for its object to confer democratic rights, then I admit much that it may contain may be viewed in the light of being indefensible and unjust. We do not, however, live—and I trust it will never be the fate of this country to live—under a democracy. The proposition which I am going to make to-night certainly have no tendency in that direction."

In retrospect this was the pinnacle of our World power, the apex of our own civilisation.

That we have declined so much since is certainly partly due to the ability of politicians bribing voters with other people's money.

So on the one hand, you appear to be saying that NI was originally envisaged to fund pensions among other things.

However, because welfare costs have outstripped the NI contributions received by the government, anybody who thinks their NI contributions were supposed to pay for their old age pension when they reached retirement age is a person who thinks they’re entitled to something they actually aren’t entitled to?

You must be quite a youngster and work for the Tory party to hold those views!
Point being the whole thing is a giant Ponzi scheme. What I'm suggesting is that rather than pretend that your NI contribution funds your pension and any benefits, HMG should have come clean years ago and either binned NI or upped the contributions to a level that could be sustained.

For the avoidance of doubt - I'm not suggesting people are stripped of their state pension. Merely that some form of reality and expectation management is applied, not just to NI but to the whole system. Even pre-Covid, we were living way beyond our means in terms of "welfare" and health. Add up the collective spend on Education, Health, Welfare (inc pensions) at it was something like £600Bn from a total of £930Bn, while tax receipts were at £873Bn - a deficit of £50-odd Bn.

Tax the rich says Captain Hindsight. Except Income tax was about £210Bn of which the top 1% pay 27% of all receipts and the top 50% pay 90% of all income tax receipts.

Tax the evil multi-national tax-dodgers says Captain Hindsight. Trouble is - all the figures bandied about in the headlines are tax paid vs sales, not tax paid vs profits. There is not a bottomless pit of unpaid corporation tax just waiting to be hoovered up. Corporation tax receipts were about £58Bn. Double it and you'd just about fill the deficit - if you're daft enough to assume that corporations wouldn't just beggar off, taking their employment (and associated income tax revenues) with them.

There needs to be a very grown-up conversation about what is appropriate and affordable for the state to provide, which isn't going to happen any time soon.

It’s easy to blame the feckless but while the government keeps to it’s current strategy of doing absolutely nothing to stimulate industry and create worthwhile jobs in the UK, those who refuse to look for work have a continuous excuse to continue their lifelong ambition to rely on free benefits to fund their lives.
You could also say it is easy to blame the government when individuals don't take personal responsibility..... I'm sure it is far more complicated. How do we stimulate industry and create 'worth while' jobs which is entirely subjective? Give the government more control? That may not always work well, and that will obviously be readily abused no matter the party let alone for any to relinquish it.

Just playing devils advocate.

I like this. Get's OTT socialist types frothing at the mouth and then 'crash' in to a 'BSOD' moment.
