CARACAS, Venezuela - President Hugo Chavez suffered a stunning defeat Monday in a referendum that would have let him run for re-election indefinitely and impose a socialist system in this major U.S. oil provider.

Voters rejected the sweeping measures Sunday by a vote of 51 percent to 49 percent, said Tibisay Lucena, chief of the National Electoral Council. She said that with 88 percent of the votes counted, the trend was irreversible.

Thank God.... Nutjob is going away.

Well, maybe not 'going away' just yet but a useful reality check for him. It will be interesting to see how he reacts to this.

You're right. I should have added... eventually. Hopefully he won't find another way to stay in power.

The likelihood of Chavez taking a great deal of notice of a virtually 50/50 poll is, IMO, minimal. It is more likely to encourage him to crack down harder on the peasants next time.

Let's face it, he's another classic South American egomaniac [never mind the policies, feel the enthusiasm] and will do what they usually do ... get the Army and Police to arrange some political advice to voters.

Castro is my hero [as well as that fat Chinese-type thing in North Korea] ... I would also like to be Socialist President for Life ...

Wouldn't you? If you could? And had no principles?

I think he'll be back after he's put his boys to work, as you said, who will spread the word to the workers the 'right' way to vote next time!

49 VS 51% IS HARDLY A STUNNING DEFEAT
mind you hopefully it puts a bit of break on him some chance

sounds strange but I didn't expect Chavez to take such a close defeat so well - won't be asking for my masters disertation back anytime soon though!
