USS Bonhomme Richard on Fire

I’ll be watching this over the next few hours to see if they follow the Indian Navy solution as demonstrated on the Hermes/Virat when she caught fire alongside.

They filled her with enough water to sink her. Put the fire out though.
Extinguished.

“it’s Sunday morning and just the duty watch are onboard. You get instructions to ready the ship for sailing. What would you do?”
Fire a gun, raise the Blue Peter and send a file of Marines round the knocking shops to find the captain?

Or have things changed since Nelson's day... #rumbumandthelash

The foremast is being reported as collapsed.

Bonhomme Richards is unlikely to return to service.
Bit of black maskers and some scotch bright, she'll be right for OST

To what degree are ships in port kept at readiness to move? Say a three week leave period at home port, is there a crew on board at all times with the minimum skills to move the ship in the event of something like this?
My regiment was twinned with The Arrer HMS Arrow. Right after returning from Omagh (May 76) B Sqn trogged along from Tidworth to Pompey to exchange pleasantries.

We got an escorted tour around. I'm sure the junior officer made a big thing of nought to 30kn in 30 min from cold. Unless it was nought to 30kn in 30sec from a standing start, hot. One or the other. Either way, he made a song and dance about two times RR Olympus as fitted to Concorde and turn the keys giving the capability to imitate a manure-exiting-shovel manoeuvre like a rat out of an aquaduct.

In all honesty, once they lost the first two minutes you need to go big and hard. The hangar/well deck in one of those things is massive, and frankly between that size and the impingements in shutting down, they probably couldn't have saved her after the first couple of minutes.

It'll be easy to monday morning quarterback this, but frankly my heart goes out to the CO and his Ship's Company. This makes me feel genuinely queasy, and we're already re-reviewing our procedures to see how we can be a little bit better.
If you need an ex Damage to give some advice I know some very good ones. And then there is me.

I think you'll find that, like normal people, they put the fire out and then went upstairs, along the corridor, past the toilet and into the canteen, via the kitchen, for a well-earned cup of tea.

Guess this will result in a career or several going up the Swannie?
Seaman Snooks, you are charged with negligence in performing a duty, namely fire sentry on board U.S.S. Bonhomme Richard, on Sunday July 12, 2020 occasioning complete loss of the ship, incurring replacement costs of 1.5 billion dollars.

Son, you’re in the shit. :)
