I also read it was a mutinous crewman he ran through, before legging it. So begs the question, was the bloke being mutinous or just a disagreement. Back then a ship’s Captain was god, so why leg it.

That was the second death he ran from.

The first;
During his second voyage in 1770, John Paul had one of his crew flogged after trying to start a mutiny about early payment of wages, leading to accusations that his discipline was "unnecessarily cruel". These claims were initially dismissed, but his favorable reputation was destroyed when the sailor died a few weeks later. John Paul was arrested for his involvement in the man's death, and was imprisoned in Kirkcudbright Tolbooth, but later released on bail.[6] The negative effect of this episode on his reputation is indisputable,[5] although the man's death has been linked to yellow fever.[citation needed] The local governor encouraged John Paul to leave the area and change his name while on bail. The man who died of his injuries was not a usual sailor but an adventurer from a very influential Scottish family.
 
Or the USN throwing a convenient scapegoat under the bus to hide systematic failings at every level? cf USS IOWA turret explosion.
Or just a disgruntled matelot, joined direct entry for SEALs and failed out, now stuck as a nobody sailor, crushed ego and dreams lead to stupid ideas....

If a few allegedly inoperable fire stations doomed the ship, what would have happened if a dirty great firework came in the side and went BANG! knocking more than a few out in the process?
 
Or just a disgruntled matelot, joined direct entry for SEALs and failed out, now stuck as a nobody sailor, crushed ego and dreams lead to stupid ideas....

who amazingly managed to set a fire that overcame the entire duty watch, the fixed firefighting equipment, the combined efforts of a couple of hundred other sailors, and the shore fire brigade.

He was so good, despite being a disgruntled sailor and SEAL wash-out, that his fire caused the complete loss of a $Bn warship, and in no way, shape or form were there systematic failings in the way ships are maintained, the standards they have, the way in which work is carried out, the size, shape, equipping and training of the USN workforce doesn't require investigation, nor does the construction of their ships need re-examining.

Because all you need to do is failing on Coronardo Beach and you're a one man wrecking machine.

Best the Chinese don't find out about this....

I think that is a sign of intent not the whole reason the ship burned. The whole being in a major refit thing is probably the culprit!

I don’t presume he is guilty, he has the right to trial under the UCMJ, l am just not agreeing it is a coverup. If he did start the fire l somehow doubt his intention was to destroy the ship, possibly just damage his compartment for reasons known only to him.

I suspect @alfred_the_great's point is that the cause of the fire is immaterial: the individual in question shouldn't have the ability to ruin a capital ship simply by setting fires.

If the trial determines the root cause was arson and leaves it at that, they are glossing over some quite serious failures within the USN.
