US trialling First Strike rations

These are not replacing MREs but are "designed for use during initial periods of highly intense, highly mobile combat operations"

The 'warfighter' pictured looks really happy with the new rations! Or is he just confused and wondering how to open the pouch?

They are not designed as a replacement for MREs, but as a lightweight option for fast movers operating in a high tempo environment.

"Hooah!"

The FSR is designed to ... meet the maneuver sustainment needs of the joint Warfighter during highly mobile, high intensity operations.
provides an average of 2900 calories per day.
I can't help thinking there must be a flaw in diet rations.

The FSR has been extensively tested by the Warfighter during OEF/OIF on an asymmetric battlefield and received positive feedback.
Is that a euphemism for vomiting?

Innovative packaging technologies enable the beverages to be reconstituted and consumed directly from the drink pouch.
I guess that this means that they're dehydrated. That's one way to save weight...

so long as extra water is available.

Although a lot quicker to prepare than bag-boiling, the MRE is thought to be too time consuming especially during an intense period of operation (hence the name). Also, MREs often get field stripped anyways.

HooAh! OMFG

Do they also contain cans of WoopAss?

Trials in the 1960s using highly concentrated screech, met with rather less than satisfactory results:

I'm no soldier, never was, but don't we already have Mars bars?
Well despite the faintly ludicrous name, Hooah bars should give you a lot more bang for your buck than a Mars bar.

Fackin' yanks, peanutfackinbutter with everything. If that was'nt bad enough in the mre's you also get that stinking jalepeno cheese and the 'pound cake' a remarkable substance able to soak up every drop of moisture in your body in about 2 seconds. Ideal when your on the surface of the sun.

Completely agree with the exception of jalapeno cheese. That was a godsend having had peanut buter and crackers for umpteen days in a row. You knew your day was going to be bad when you got the black bean burrito!

The new hot weather trial rations that we got in afghan had a fair bit of the stuff from them strike meals, some of it was mega mega nice, some not so much. The filled sandwich jobbies are in them and are mega, ranger bars, nutrigrain type bars, fruit and nut mix, little fruit puree pouches you suck, raspbery etc drink mix sachets, milkshake mix. loads of stuff, they're actually pretty good.

One menu has apple cider. Though the yanks were meant to be dry on Ops!
