Talks between the US and the Taliban look unlikely to take place today as tensions surrounding the process grow. Talks between the US and the Taliban aimed at ending the Afghan war have been delayed for several days following anger from President Hamid Karzai. The Afghan leader cancelled a peace delegation to Doha, Qatar, where security talks between the US and the Taliban were due to take place today.
He was angry about a move by the Taliban to cast their new office in the Gulf nation of Qatar as a rival embassy.

They've moved into a new ******* office, The Taliban held a ribbon-cutting ceremony Tuesday in which they hoisted their flag and a banner with the name they used while in power more than a decade ago: "Political Office of the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan."

Karzai is stubborn and says what he thinks, not the best negotiator they could have picked. When are the next Afghan presidential elections?

He'll also be the first to make a run for Dubai with suitcases full of cash when it goes pear shaped after ISAF leave and he's manage to sabotage any meaning peace talks from a position of strength like he's doing now.

'Stubborn and says what he thinks' is the Afghan national character. Karzai is actually a pretty good politician. He has to be, otherwise he'd be rotting in a ditch by now.

He won't need a suitcase, the money is already shifted. He won't stick around
Yep, you can bet your arse he's been planning his move for a long time. Whatever you might think of him he's not THAT stupid to hang around once we leave, that hole is going to a complete and utter cluster (even more so than now) once we pull out and he knows it.

Google image Mohammad Najibullah and you'll see what the Taliban will do to Karzai and his henchmen if he stays. The Taliban do not believe in democracy or multi-party elections. They believe they have the sole right under their Prophet to rule Afghanistan an implement the harshest form of Islam they can. As such, as many posters have said before, Karzai will be on the last USAAF C17 leaving Afghanistan with a nice condo in Florida waiting for him. Don't blame him either! Kabul is a sh*thole!

What people are missing is that Hamid Karzai is a Pashtun, a Durrani, and a member of a large and powerful family not just in Afghan but the region as a whole, and as a result one of the most powerful and popular political figures in Afghanistan. It will take more than just a few Taliban insurgents to unseat him, or his dynasty. I really honestly don't believe he is scared, at all.

isnt the presidency limited to a number of terms which means he's out of power anyway? sadly i think this makes it less likely that we'll get to see his head on a pike.

The lessons learned at the end of those particular imperialistic incursions was, "Don't bother incursing into Afghanistan cos you won't win."
However the lessons learnt from previous imperialistic incursions - Alexander, Romans, Templars, Mongols - is "Help yourself to Afghanistan boys, they're are a bunch of pussies!"

So there you are, learning.
