US Deploying to Gulf

China would argue with that. Ever since things have gone bang some idiot/hero has been willing to sacrifice themself for the greater good.

Many were being hoisted by their own petard long before the Tamil's took up the baton.

Iran's gambit is similar; rattle enough of the sabre to grab global attention, rattle it loud enough to create panic to try and isolate the US internationally and force them to exceed to demands re: sanctions.

All fun and games till something sleek and expensive penetrates your air defences without you knowing and drops a JDAM on all you hold dear.

I've never been to Iran. I bet it's cold in winter.

Sounds like we could have woken up to a new world this morning. Fortunately, sanity seems to have prevailed with POTUS.

'Previously simmering tensions between Iran and the United States are now starting to boil over after the Middle Eastern nation shot down an American drone overnight.

'The New York Times reports President Donald Trump approved retaliatory military strikes against Iranian targets, such as radar and missile batteries, before abruptly pulling back from launching them in the evening (US time). It says the operation had started, planes were in the air and ships were in position when the last-minute order came to stand down.'

Because his boss told him to back off.

Trump said:
Fortunately that drone was unarmed. There was no man in it and it was just over international waters, clearly over international waters, but we didn’t have a man or woman in the drone.

“We had nobody in the drone. It would have made a big difference, let me tell you. It would have made a big, big difference.

“I have a feeling, and maybe I’m wrong and maybe I’m right, but I’m right a lot, I have a feeling that it was a mistake made by somebody that shouldn’t have been doing what they did. I think they made a mistake.
What a babbling idiot.

I can only imagine John Bolton on his knees, pleading: "Please don't call off the strikes sir. Please!!!"

There' a novelty. The use of the word "sanity" applied to POTUS.
Since he hasn't previously demonstrated any, rather than this being some sort of unicorn event, I would go with the things he HAS demonstrated.
Cowardice, corruption, treason, idiocy and lack of attention span.

Christ f-k it's almost like they are actively seeking an invasion.
You're getting it. See my post in the other thread, they want this. Martyrdom of a few hundred is worth the kudos and distraction. More arms to Hizb and Houthi to keep the green crescent going and piss of the Sauds.

They also happen to be aware that there's no appetite for more foreign adventures in the US.

They can wire in to their dissidents without attracting too much attention as a bonus.

The holding off of immediate military retaliation would seem a very sensible approach by the US.

The full circumstances can now be fully ascertained without it being a war zone. Iran’s actions can now be analysed and revealed to the International community for what they have been, are, and continue to be: aggressive, provocative and in violation of International norms.

It is highly likely they have also been cheating on nuclear accords, and are in fact going to declare it shortly claiming that they have been forced into it.

If they had hoped for some form of US action that they could then start screaming to the world about, it would seem they have been denied that. What is very likely is that at an appropriate time, place and manner, the US will make it clear to them tht this was not a good idea.

No doubt the wait will have its own effect on them.

The US has responded to Iran’s shoot-down.

US Cyber attack on Iranian Military Command and Control, on its missile systems, and on other IRG assets. Imposing further economic sanctions for the loss of the Drone.

The demonstration that it’s principal air defence systems are vulnerable should give the Mullahs pause for thought.

If
a) it actually happened
b) it was effective
c) it didn't just demonstrate their vulnerabilities, giving them the opportunity to fix them

The ability of the Iranian air defence office staff to browse for porn on their office PCs may have been crippled and that would constitute an attack on their air defence systems. Whether that has any effect on their ability to operate their radars and missiles is of course an entirely different question.
