U.S. Democrats and pro-Israel lobbies slammed on Thursday comments made by newly elected Republican Senator and Tea Party representative Rand Paul who suggested that the United States should halt all foreign aid including its financial aid to Israel.

In an interview with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer on Wednesday Paul said that “Reuters did a poll, and 71 percent of American people agree with me that when we're short of money, where we can't do the things we need to do in our country, we certainly shouldn't be shipping the money overseas.”

When asked by Blitzer if he wanted to halt an annual $3 billion that go to Israel, Paul replied affirmatively, explaining that Egypt recieves almost the same amount .

"You have to ask yourself, are we funding an arms race on both sides? I have a lot of sympathy and respect for Israel as a democratic nation, as, you know, a fountain of peace and a fountain of democracy within the Middle East. But at the same time, I don't think funding both sides of the arm race, particularly when we have to borrow the money from China to send it to someone else. We just can't do it anymore. The debt is all- consuming and it threatens our well-being as a country,” Paul said.
Do you support the Senator? Is his proposal reasonable?

Think the last time USA threatened to halt aid to Israel was when Israel was in the process of selling latest weapons systems/technology to China. Sale was cancelled and aid continued.

With friends like Israel....
in principal... i agree with Rand Paul. *shudders*
but that's not how politics works.
unless he wants america to lose influence.
Silly boy. It's politically suicidal to even suggest such a thing:

o Israel is still rather popular in the US even if you poll Democrats
o There was a time when US aid was vital for Israel, few realize that time is long past
o It's now a habituated policy like the Cuba embargo
o The American polity is very slow to drop dumb things its done for decades
o On the right unthinking supporting Israel is as much a marker of GOP allegiance as knee jerk anti-semitism once was
o Amongst bits of the very large US hard right it's an article of faith with a scriptural basis
o Most GOP voters haven't even accepted that the right's favored entitlements need drastic trimming, particularly defense pork
o Heavyweight US defense contractors will hate him, this is their stealth socialist sausage factory he's messing with
o That's a lot of tax payer subsidized jobs at a time when US unemployment is in real terms at Irish levels
o The Israeli lobby rivals the NRA in power and can seriously damage a politicians prospects
o They'll spin this as anti-semitism and a whiff of that's real unpopular stateside, a "Macaca Moment"
o Some swing states such as Florida have a large pro-Israel vote
o Bush senior did himself no good at all in his failed 2nd tern run by tinkering with Israel's bloated stipend
o Talk like this will make Barry a shoo in in 2012
o Teaper objective #1 is for Barry to humiliatingly fail in that race
