Urban Army Myth?

#1
Remember years ago about the Jerries lending a Leopard 1 to the UK for trials. Took it to Bovvie I guess for 'testing'

Few years later they asked for it back.

somehow at Bovvie it had been sectioned to show the internals?

TRUE OR MYTH?

More likely the Germans loaned on from the stock at Castle Martin ranges... or the Brits went to Castle Martin to see how it worked.

We struck a deal in the '60s to train Boxhead recruits in Wales, to allow the BGs to use Bergan Hohne.

Any disected tanks were probably 'officially' cut up.

A myth, it had not been sectioned.
Someone had nicked it.

It's half-myth half-rumour I suspect. At Shrivenham there is a Leopard that has been cut straight down the middle in the AFV 'museum' by, IIRC, Vickers apprentices over a period of several years. It is a Leopard 1 and was a gift from the W German govt. All above board. I used to like dropping off there. It was always interesting loads :)

Been about a year since I was there last, but if I remember correctly:

If you're on about the one at Shrivenham - it was already cut up for the German Army and used to teach. It was then gifted. Now housed at AFV Wing Shrivenham.

Edited to add - Speedy by name, Speedy by nature ;o)
Writing mine as you posted yours.

I think you will find that the sectioned tank at Bovvy is a Centurion.

Back on topic of Army myths;

Is there any truth in the tale of the Engineer Troop who blew the bridge in BATUS too early, while the DS and DSO were still stood on it?

...or is this just a myth used to scare Troopies on the DSO course?

Holy thread resurrection Batman!

Picked up on this and it seems a good place to ask:

Back in the 80's I heard a story of some fella who decided to sleep under a Chieftain because it was raining so hard. Boggy ground, it sank in and crushed him. I think there was another one about some bloke sleeping in his slit trench and getting squashed by a Chieftain. Both stories located in Germany.

Heard the 'sleeping under the tank' story several times in BAOR. Had a Bedford reverse into my tent in the dark on sennelager. 'First in the maggot race' is not even close...
