  1. Thought it was about time to upgrade my Desktop PC. As my motherboard has no spare slots for RAM (2Gb) I will have to buy a new one.

I currently have a Neo PT8 motherboard which has 184 pin DDR RAM and the processor is socket 478.

I was hoping to buy a new motherboard with more slots for RAM and utilise the old 2Gb and transfer the processor.

I have had a quick look but have been unable to find anything.

Would I have to buy new RAM and a processor ?

Any suggestions, recommendations would be appreciated.
  2. Hi,
Nope wouldn't bother its all very old spec stuff to be honest.
Your options are buy all the bits and lob one together or dare i say it PC world usually have some cracking deals on pc's to be honest.pc world linky
another cheap place to buy pc's is www.ebuyer.com.
What will you be using the pc for?

    Kind regards,

  3. I know as much about computers as Worzel Gummidge, but my lad told me to buy an external hard drive (USB connected) and put photos, porn, etc on it.Just like having new PC for £54 :D
  4. A couple of things to consider is that a 32-bit system can only support a maximum of 4GB of RAM. If you wanting to go above 4GB you are going to need to convert to 64-bit OS.

Also the speed of the RAM is actually quite important as it is a major bottleneck in the speed of PCs these days. It's best to budget for more RAM capacity and speed than spending the extra money on getting a slightly faster processor.

  5. So looks like I will have to get windows 7 and upgrade. Not sure if I want to go down that road. Computer is not painfully slow, mainly got used to it and things are taking their toll on the RAM. Probably better off building a new one, but will then have a redundant perfectly good computer. May just plod on with this.
  6. If anything have a look at overclockers uk...they do some decent spec machines pre built better than any tripe you can get from PC world.
  7. however overclockers customer service record is shat, try ebuyer or scan or even aria, please don't touch overclockers i say this from personel experience.
  8. Have decided to stick with what I have for a while at least. If I were to buy a new motherboard, Processor and maybe 8Gb RAM, would then get Windows 7.

My system does all I want, not the top of the range PC it once was when I built it, but if it's not broke, no need to fix it.
  9. Dont know if it is up your street but you may try a clean install of your operating system, you may find this "speeds" up your system enough for your needs for a while.
