UK shipbuilding boosted by warship procurement

Vital warships providing supplies and technical support to the Royal Navy's aircraft carriers will made by British-led teams, Defence Secretary Ben Wallace has announced.

Perhaps because AIUI if they're classed as warships, under existing EU competition rules, the competition doesn't have to consider bids from outside the UK.

Painted grey, fly a blue ensign, has a few RN types on board? Warship, job done.

As we're out in a few weeks that was always a red herring. Calling them warships is more likely to be aimed at making John Spellar shut up and giving some clarity to potential bidders.

Trouble is - saying you want to build them in the UK and finding somewhere available and capable of doing so are two very different things......
 
Be interesting to see where 'warships' leads - has the esteemed Minister considered the crewing and port visits fallout?
