ANSO North – Security Incident – Armed attack on ISAF – Balkh Province.

Incident report: ANSO N291005-096

Location: Balkh Province, Mazar-e-Sharif City.

Incident type: Armed attack.

Date/Time of incident: 29 October 2005, approximately 0830hrs.

Report status: Confirmed.

Information: At approximately 0830hrs an ISAF convoy was engaged by small arms fire in Mazar-e-Sharif city, south of the central mosque. The area has been closed and ANSO advises all NGOs to postpone any travel in or through the city centre. Police have made a number of arrests in relation to the attack. The situation is reported as calm and under control of ANP.

Casualties: Unknown.

Arrest: Exact number unknown. Unconfirmed 3 arrests.

Assessment This is the first deliberate attack on ISAF in Mazar-e-Sharif city and may be an indication of the presence of anti government elements in the region.

Advisory: ANSO advises NGOs to postpone all travel in or through Mazar-e-Sharif city for the remainder of today, and if traveling in the near future, to ensure a two car policy is used.

another tragic loss...

But with an increasing presence in the region, I suspect this is going to be something that we will sadly,.... have to get used to ..
