UK forces and Mujahedin in Bosnia

Welcome to the Army Rumour Service, ARRSE

The UK's largest and busiest UNofficial military website.

The heart of the site is the forum area, including:

  1. This video ( ) purports to show British troops escorting Arab mujahedin away from one of the besieged safe areas (can't remember which, sorry).

The incident is referred to in this book:

The Warriors, uniforms and SA80s- as well as vintage taches- certainly look British. Does anyone know which unit this was, and where/when? It looks like an interesting story, and I want to know more.
  2. Tis interesting. The guys being let out certainly don't look like Bosnians.
  3. I doubt it's during the Autumn of 1995 as 1RRF shot and killed a Muja attempting to break into a Brit base. After that there was a fatwa against British troops that lasted untill the Bosnians were forced to repatriate all foreign fighters during the Spring of 1996 (IFOR). As the British soldiers are using Warriors I doubt it is the Summer of 1995 as the D&D's were deployed as part of Task Force Alpha giving some to the Serbs on Igman - the other Britfor battalion had Saxon.

As for complicity in supporting a Jihad against the Serbs - utter b0llox - those Muja were probably "escorted" to an area where they wouldn't upset the fragile Muslim-Croat Federation. Also notice that the Muja were not armed during transit showing it wasn't a troop transport to get them to the front line. Another possibility is that they were part of a prisoner exchange by the Croats - the Serbs definiately wouldn't have let them go!
  4. Oh, I wasn't accusing our chaps of genocidal Serbophobia- the guy who uploaded it obviously has his axe to grind, and the toms don't look especially enamoured of their charges...

regarding date, I've just found that Evan F. Kohlmann, a Cambridge don, wrote:

That would have really fucked me off.

TSO, the guy who wrote the above book said that the video showed jihadis being taken from a Serb-surrounded safe area, mightily pissing off the Serbs. But he was shown the vid by Serbian intelligence, who may well have put their own spin on it... I'll check the location when I get home.

I'd be grateful for any more info arrsers could provide...

If it's the same incident I'm thinking of, then Major Kent-Payne and is oppo's quietly and menacingly trained ALL their weapons (including the vehicle-born) on the jihadees and waited. The jihadees blinked first, and the unit was allowed through the checkpoint.

I may be wrong, but stand-off I'm thinking of lasted about 40 mins. They were initially told that they could not pass, but Major Kent-Payne insisted, and they did get through.
  6. More details about this incident in Evan Kohlmann's excellent book "Al-Qaida's Jihad in Europe: The Afghan-Bosnian Network".

Apparently this is a prisoner exchange, and that the UNPROFOR Britbat (don't know which) assisted in handing over Arab's captured by the Serbs before they could be tortured to death. The UN oversaw the transfer, the British provided transport and manpower. Note how grateful they are when they are released (kissing ground etc). I believe several of those released were killed in fighting a few months later.

The video shows MP badges on some of the British soldiers escorting the Arabs from the Warriors, so I assume they played a role.

But read the book for more details.
