UK announces RAF and Royal Navy support to Qatar World Cup 2022

The UK has announced its commitment to helping Qatar deliver a safe and secure FIFA World Cup 2022. The announcement coincides with this week’s visit by the Amir of Qatar Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al Thani to the UK, where he m…

The biggest threat posed to the Qatar WC is the facilities turning out to be cack. The death toll building them was horrendous and the nation hasn't exactly got the best human rights record either.

With all these wendyballers around are there going to be enough 5 star hotels for the RAF?

Edit to add: After reading the report the Qataris better lock up their pet canines if 12 Sqn are going...

I have two thoughts.

1. Is providing RAF/Navy assets to an entirely private commercial soccer tournament a good use of scarce resources?

2. Is the UK going to get a preferential supply of Qatari LNG next winter in return for this?

One of the worlds biggest human rights abusers getting support from the UK military.
Just how short of gas are we?
Not short of gas right now but in winter we need a steady supply of LNG imports to make sure we don't have to rely on any imports by pipeline from mainland Europe in really cold weather.

Unfortunately, almost every major energy exporting country in the World is a human rights abuser.

"the World Cup deployment co-insides [sic]with a pre-planned deployment."

I think this actually translates as 'The World Cup deployment coincides with a pre-planned deployment, namely a deployment to provide air defence to Qatar during the World Cup'... It's been on the cards for quite some time, AIUI. One of the reasons the Qataris wanted Typhoon was to ensure that they had a top-notch QRA aircraft, after all.

If you think about nearby states (well one of them...) which might try to cause mischief and embarrassment, and bear in mind that Qatar - for all its faults - is an ally, then it's a bit of a no-brainer. The fact that it might lead to gratitude in the form of energy supplies and more purchases of British-built kit could be a happy coincidence.

It is I think more than a coincidence that at the exact time the UK would be in need of a long line of LNG tankers arriving to unload would be the exact time when the World Cup is on.

Morning All,
From today's local 'comic'
Seems there'll be no jiggy-jiggy in Qatar unless you're married but not sure how they'll stop it in the privacy of your hotel room.
