Today marks 54 years since U.D.I.

Rhodesia – The Last Eden (by David Mead)

"In the morning and at the going down of the sun we were sold by our Queen and Empire for a few pieces of impure silver."

Today will be a special day for a very special few who understand what courage and sacrifice was made to build Rhodesia.

Our forbears took a nation from the mud hut to the supersonic jet in a few short years.
We manufactured our own steel, glass, ethanol, food, textiles, explosives, rail-roads and just about anything you care to think about.
We converted to metric in the sixties and educated more native people than any other nation in Africa despite the burden of fighting a guerilla war, sponsored by China and Russia and supported by all members of the United Nations.
We were totally self-sufficient in food and agricultural supplies despite the blockade which the British Navy commanded over our supply lines.

At Independence, we handed over a nation where seventy percent of our armed forces were black indigenous people.
Our currency although already devalued was equal to the British Pound, then the strongest currency on earth.

Many of us were to bury our friends, heroes and loved ones in their sacred shrouds on hallowed ground.
That those places have now been desecrated places a sad indictment upon the perpetrators, for their sins may be remembered "unto the third and even the fourth generation."

On the 11th November we will remember our people who stood side by side with Australians, Kiwis, British, Americans and Scandinavians, French, Free Polish, Greeks and a multitude of brother nations during the First and Second World Wars defending both civilisation and humanity.
Who made sacrifices on the Western Front, in North Africa, Burma, India, Egypt and Malaya and the many gallant men who flew aircraft and manned ships which ultimately saved mother England from total obliteration.

Many of our pioneers including Cecil Rhodes, Alfred Beit and Kingsley Fairbridge bequeathed their wealth to the world.
Our heroes, brothers and loved ones died not in vain. With great fortitude and commitment and against overwhelming odds, they defended our right to pursue civilisation as we determined it
We should be extremely proud that we were once Rhodesians.

May today be a very special day as you all commemorate the declaration of independence on 11th November 1965.
To those valiant hearts who paid the ultimate sacrifice. We the Rhodesians; "we shall not forget." You will be forever in our hearts though you lie beneath the soil of Africa.

The date was chosen deliberately and with no malice felt for the sovereign.
Indeed, successive British governments had been the ones to prove "perfidious Albion," and the Soviets' highest placed agent was stunned into silence when he found British troops wouldn't fight their kith and kin.

The text of the Unilateral Declaration of Independence:

"Whereas in the course of human affairs history has shown that it may become necessary for a people to resolve the political affiliations which have connected them with another people and to assume amongst other nations the separate and equal status to which they are entitled:

And Whereas in such event a respect for the opinions of mankind requires them to declare to other nations the causes which impel them to assume full responsibility for their own affairs:

Now Therefore, We, The Government of Rhodesia, Do Hereby Declare:

That it is an indisputable and accepted historic fact that since 1923 the Government of Rhodesia have exercised the powers of self-government and have been responsible for the progress, development and welfare of their people;

That the people of Rhodesia having demonstrated their loyalty to the Crown and to their kith and kin in the United Kingdom and elsewhere through two world wars, and having been prepared to shed their blood and give of their substance in what they believed to be the mutual interests of freedom-loving people, now see all that they have cherished about to be shattered on the rocks of expediency;

That the people of Rhodesia have witnessed a process which is destructive of those very precepts upon which civilization in a primitive country has been built, they have seen the principles of Western democracy, responsible government and moral standards crumble elsewhere, nevertheless they have remained steadfast;

That the people of Rhodesia fully support the requests of their government for sovereign independence but have witnessed the consistent refusal of the Government of the United Kingdom to accede to their entreaties;

That the Government of the United Kingdom have thus demonstrated that they are not prepared to grant sovereign independence to Rhodesia on terms acceptable to the people of Rhodesia, thereby persisting in maintaining an unwarrantable jurisdiction over Rhodesia, obstructing laws and treaties with other states and the conduct of affairs with other nations and refusing assent to laws necessary for the public good, all this to the detriment of the future peace, prosperity and good government of Rhodesia;

That the Government of Rhodesia have for a long period patiently and in good faith negotiated with the Government of the United Kingdom for the removal of the remaining limitations placed upon them and for the grant of sovereign independence;

That in the belief that procrastination and delay strike at and injure the very life of the nation, the Government of Rhodesia consider it essential that Rhodesia should attain, without delay, sovereign independence, the justice of which is beyond question;

Now Therefore, We The Government of Rhodesia, in humble submission to Almighty God who controls the destinies of nations, conscious that the people of Rhodesia have always shown unswerving loyalty and devotion to Her Majesty the Queen and earnestly praying that we and the people of Rhodesia will not be hindered in our determination to continue exercising our undoubted right to demonstrate the same loyalty and devotion, and seeking to promote the common good so that the dignity and freedom of all men may be assured, Do, By This Proclamation, adopt, enact and give to the people of Rhodesia the Constitution annexed hereto;

God Save The Queen.

Given under Our Hand at Salisbury, this eleventh day of November in the Year of Our Lord one thousand nine hundred and sixty-five."

What a load of rubbish. How convenient that the racist secession was made on the 11th November so that legitimate remembrance could be highjacked for support for the regimes ideas. Rhodesia wasn't sold down the river for any amount of money it was told it's internal politics were abhorrent to civilised people.

And there speaks the font of all knowledge so it must be true.

If it eased the conscience of people overseas, what was the cost for Rhodesia and now Zimbabwe? It is very hard to argue that black Africans, and whites in Zimbabwe, benefited. What does one attach most importance to therefore? A principle or real world consequences?

You make the assumption that there are two alternatives, white rule and the current situation. It's quite possible that the Chinese and Russians wouldn't have had any leverage if the 'British' whites had not behaved as they did.

The real world consequences of Britain not dismantling her empire and handing power to the native populations would have been far worse for Britain and the ex empire. For some reason however the whites of Zimbabwe thought they were a special case. I can't imagine why they should believe this, maybe you'd like to explain that.

Feelz. Because the rest of the continent is doing so well. Looking North, many would see that and prefer to go the developmental route rather than regress, but those not affected appear to have had louder voices. Nothing to do with thinking they're a special case.

There are will always be those whose selfish nature will allow them to destroy their own future for the promise of the reward of other's labor.

You're quite unaware of the history and politics of southern Africa aren't you ?

Demographics and society, for one.

Rhodesia had a very large white native population who formed every branch of government, commerce, civic structure and local administration - i.e. not just the small colonial administration that was the case in most other African colonies.

The whites were themselves resident natives of course. They were not UK government officials who would be on the next plane home when the flag was pulled down. The country belonged to the Rhodesians as much as anyone else.

(Stand by for a schism of opinion between those who have lived in Africa and those who have not).

You mean practical experience against disproven theory ?

because starting from a racist base they'd never involved the coloured population.

On much the same basis as India belonged to the East India Company, Malaysia to the Federation of Rubber Planters etc. etc. A country belongs to it's population, all of them, not the small percentage who decide they're the only ones to be fit to be in control. If the Norman French still applied the same principle to England you probably wouldn't have the vote. Which is an interesting thought when Cecil Rhodes claimed the Anglo-Saxon race was superior, that actually they were the losers.

Then like I said explain it, explain why Southern Africa is in some way 'special' and only white men are fit to rule in this area.

No the rest of the continent is not doing well and neither practically is the rest of the world. Even gods own county [as some would like to believe we are] is regressing into narrow minded bigotry, because all humans are no where near as clever as the think they are.

Some certainly aren't.
