That's not quite true: some of the maritime constabulary the RN does directly affects the public, as it affects shipping rates and therefore costs of goods.

However, the public no longer understands this.

This.

And in part the public no longer understands this because many of those in government/mainstream politics no longer understand this.

On several levels... attrition, lead times on builds, lead times on builds of replacements, lead times on training, lead times on training of casualty replacements...

Moreover, we have modern governments who are unwilling to say that 'X' is a threat.

Actually, not so true. They're quite happy to say 'X' is threat when 'X' is a bunch of sandal-wearing fundamentalists far, far away.

They're less willing to say 'X' is a threat when it's a bunch of fundamentalists at home, or 'X' is China.

And, in part, they fail to understand/are less willing because VSOs won't say it out loud... or because certain news outlets have an eye on the Chinese market and so won't report it even if it is said out loud.

It has ever been thus.

Huge expansion and then the subsequent contraction often with ships in the process of being built.

But Mr Bonio said that made him a great statesman or something. He single-handedly saved the world financial system dontcha know.
Of course the real irony after those decades being told by campaigners and NGO's that writing off their debt would solve all these nations problems when the Western World and IMF actually wrote off the debt of all those heavily indebted African nations they promptly got themselves back into debt with China via their "Belt and Road Initiative"... almost as if those Countries were so corrupt and incapable of managing their finances that they were more then happy to replace one unpayable debt with another as long as the right Government official got a back hander and the Military got some shiny NORINCO produced equipment to show off at the annual Independence day parades!

How dare you. David Lammy says we have to celebrate the positives.

Also we mustn't offend China, the tag line to the hit Chinese movie 'Wolf Warrior II' set in Africa and in part about their benevolent "Belt and Road Initiative is (and I am not joking):

"Anyone who offends China, no matter how remote, must be exterminated."

Classy!

An essential watch for anyone wanting to understand the mindset of a great many Nationalistic Chinese, inc the Gov and Armed Forces.

This film is second only to StarWars in how much money it has made - virtually all in the PRC Box office

It looks very Hollywood in style and substance. If that's what they like to watch in the theatres in China then it sounds like the Chinese mass market is as low brow as the rest of the world.

Attendance may have been mandatory. Have to earn those Social Credit System points anyway you can.

Ohhhh no it certainly isn't Hollywood in Style and Substance, it is more similar to an 90's Hong Kong Action movie but with a larger budget and less subtle to such a degree it makes Red Dawn look like a serious treatise on Pacifism it is so chest thumping pro PLA and PRC!

The RN is going down the LCS modules route with "PODS". Hope we actually get it to work!
