    Two British service personnel have been killed in a roadside blast in southern Afghanistan, the Ministry of Defence has said.

    They died when an improvised explosive device detonated, the MoD said. Their next of kin have been informed.

    The deaths on Saturday bring the total number of British personnel killed in Afghanistan since 2001 to 173.

    Update

    A soldier from 2nd Battalion The Mercian Regiment was killed by a rocket-propelled grenade, the MoD said.

    A soldier from The Light Dragoons was killed in an explosion.

    Both families have been informed
