Soldiers killed in motorway crash
(Filed: 05/04/2005)

Two soldiers have died after an Army Land Rover crashed into a motorway bridge support.

The Army personnel were travelling south on the M6 near Stafford services in the vehicle when the accident happened shortly before noon yesterday.

A Central Motorway Police Group spokesman said one soldier was pronounced dead at the scene and a second occupant of the vehicle died in The University Hospital of North Staffordshire, Stoke-on-Trent.

A third soldier, who was airlifted to the same hospital, remains in a serious condition.

An Army spokesman said that the soldiers who were killed were both members of the 1st Battalion, The Royal Green Jackets, based at Weeton Barracks in Lancashire.

Their next-of-kin have been informed of the tragedy, but their names have not yet been released.

It was not known where the Land Rover was travelling to, but the soldiers were said to have been undertaking a routine journey.
A sad day. Condolences to their families.
