It was ever so in my time (1970's-1990's). More likely to die in a car accident than anything else. Lots of accidents by guys returning on leave, many hours of driving to the port, then onto the wrong side in the UK with lots of hours driving the other side.
Trouble is we all think we are superhuman and shrug off 12 hours on duty like it was just an inconvenience. 12 hours on the road is a little different but we treated it the same.
