Tuesday 9 Feb: 1 French soldier KIA in Kapisa province RC-E

PARIS (AP) — France's government says a French soldier has been killed in a gunfight with insurgents in eastern Afghanistan.

President Nicolas Sarkozy's office says the soldier died Tuesday after insurgents attacked an Afghan army convoy escorted by French troops into the Alasay valley in Kapisa province.

Sarkozy says France remains undaunted in its role to help stabilize Afghanistan. Some 3,750 French troops are now deployed in and near Afghanistan as part of the NATO mission in the country.

France has lost 40 troops in Afghanistan since 2001. French troops are deployed mainly in Kapisa and the Surobi district north and east of Kabul.

The latest French KIA has been named as 1ère classe (Pfc) Enguerrand Libaert from the 13e BCA (13 Bn, Mountain Rifles). He was 20, single, and it was his first deployment.
